Good Movies (on Dvd)

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm definitely a minority here in more ways than one. As an expat, I did not come here seeking beautiful Thai's, though I'm glad there are so many of them, inside and out. I came here to be with my Thai wife, who had to return per obligation after finishing her PhD work. I gave up my "life" in the US and settled here North of Bangkok and South of Chaing Mai.

As such, I'm starved for many things I'm used to finding back home. Happily, I can get decent bread and cheese sent to me from Chiang Mai, but one of the things I still miss are good movies on DVD.

In the states, we enjoyed Netflix (anyone know what I mean?). They have a great catalog of films from all through the decades, and they come by mail for as long as you want. When you send one back you get another right away.

I know this is impossible in the land of silly Thai comedies and bootleg DVD copies of Terminator 12 (I like rocking the floor with explosions too, don't get me wrong! :o ) but I'm still trying to find/develop a network of people of have access so some level of "sophisticated" DVD content. I wish we could find a way to share it if it's not available from any professional source in this country.

For numerous reasons, I'd prefer to borrow "legal" content, but I hope in their heart of hearts the media mogul gods would understand my starvation. ;-)

Let's us real movie fans in Thailand ban together and find away to quench our thirst!

I often think of all the great movies that are coming out in the states that we will never hear about in LOS. If you've got cash, there is always Amazon.com. I think Thaivisa should set up their own Netflix aimed at the expat market. Ok george?

Maybe we could start a movie fan forum, at least, which would allow us all to share what we know about good new and old films on DVD.

Then, if enough of us ask for this and that from the vendors out there, at least they might start carrying some of them.

I wish I could find a good vendor who'd be willing to find the films I want. Like many merchants, though, they probably figure that too many choices can slow sales.

I wish I could find at least one who had the right connections and could get me all the Cohen Bros. and Fassbinder and who-knows-what's-new that I want. I can't be the only one who's interested in this. :o

My wife just said, "let's watch a movie", but I think I have only thing left around that we haven't seen! And the theaters in my town don't even offer English subtitles. :D
