Will Thailand Buy Russian T-90 Tanks?
By Franz-Stefan Gady

Delays in the delivery of Ukrainian-made Oplot tanks made the Thai military look for alternatives.

LONDON: -- Thailand is considering buying an unknown number of Russian-made T-90S or MS main battle tanks (MBT). According to the website Defence Blog, a Thai delegation visited the Russian city of Nizhny Tagil, the site of the largest main battle tank manufacturer in the world.

The Royal Thai Army delegation expressed interest in both the T-90(M)S and the T-14 Armata MBT – dubbed “Russia’s deadliest tank” (See: “It’s Official: Russia’s Deadliest Tank Will Be Ready for Battle in 2020”). However, the export version of the T-14 MBT is still in the development stage and would not be ready in time to replace Thailand’s aging fleet of M48A5 ‘Patton’ tanks.

In 2011, Thailand placed a $240 million order for the purchase of 49 Ukrainian-made T-84 ‘Oplot-M’ MBTs plus a number of support vehicles with Ukrspetsexport, a Ukrainian state-owned defense contractor. Yet, by the end of 2015, only ten tanks had been delivered to the Royal Thai Army, causing concern over future delays among high-ranking officers in the Royal Thai Army.

10 tanks, that's enough hardware to control chiang mai, udon, and KK, they can cancel the rest and pocket the money... whistling.gif

Not that they need new tanks for that. You can machine gun a crowd from a 40 year old tank as effectively as from a brand new one, and lets face it that is the only use they have for tanks.

But the new ones can shoot them from further away.... :)

alright, cancel the order, spend the money on the 30 bhat program to make sure the people gunned down from the old tanks are healthy...

nah, nothing in it for the generals, ... bad idea.

Obsolete way of fighting an enemy with tanks ,they are still way too heavy and expensive to move and have a restricted elevation, would be far more dominate in a fight with cheap kamikaze drones that fly directly up the gun current and explode, how many drones could you buy for the cost of 10 tanks 240 million, i see them advertised for 22000 baht, lets see thats = a lot ,

Know the facts. This is due to conflict and resultant upheaval in Ukraine, nothing to do with Thailand.

But for what? Toppling cities? Defending borders? Just seems like they're mostly used for intimidation.

Ah the old sensible logical post, sorry leeneeds it doesn't apply here. It's not about tanks it's about syphoning the funds budgeted for the tanks.

Thailand is also considering the Chinese VT4 / MBT-3000 tank that is designed as a competitor to the Russian T-90. The Thai army required the new tanks to have a 125-mm tank gun that effectively eliminates any Western manufactured tank.

A report in 2014 by the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade indicated that the global demand for new tanks will sharply decline from 2014 to 2017 compared with the previous four-year period, that should present good bargains for buyers.Maybe the Junta can do another G2G deal and tradeoff more of its stockpiled rice and rubber.

Meanwhile it remains to see if the RTA will renege on the Ukraine purchase without penalties.

According to a Thai news source, TMA created a special committee on the purchase of new tanks to "unleash impasse” with receiving the Ukrainian. According to a Russian news source, the possible breach of TMA's tank contract with Ukraine allows the contract to be "customized" for political reasons and competitive pricing: "This could be bribed and custom information ... This practice on the arms market exists. In fact, the contract is implemented, its implementation – is funded.”

Tank warfare was devised for war in Europe where you have vast lands of heavy forest and plains.A tank can travel through forest and over farm land, and rolling hills. They do not work well in jungle areas.I The Vietnam War the US and South Vietnamese ended up using them mostly as stationary gun emplacements. The NVA were using Russian tanks to somewhat of an advantage along the DMZ .In or about 1966 The US Army introduced the "wire guided " missile to their Cobra helicopter gun ships..In less then a month The NVA lost 80% or their tanks to these missiles. The rest were pulled back to the Hanoi area where The Cobras could not go.Tanks for Thailand will be about as useless as submarines or their aircraft carrier(that no Thai has landed on with a fighter aircraft). It is just another way for LOS Army to get money in the generals pocket.

I don't think tanks would be much use against modern weaponry after 2020,they can be hit from missiles by drones above the clouds and they're relatively slow and cumbersome.....

The next generation of fighter jets will change they way targets are locked onto and destroyed from so far away they won't even know what happened until they're already dead...

Who uses them? You might want to google your question and you will every country uses them and developing/buying new ones.

When boots-on-the-ground forces like Army and Marines are no longer required then we'll probably see tanks only in museums which I don't foresee happening in at least a hundred life times. And I say this after a career in the air force.
