Quite a lot of nonsense written here. Has anyone here had a repossession because of credit card debt? It is unsecured credit.

Whilst in Brazil and paying for my shopping in the supermarket, the cashier asked if I wanted to pay half now. It's normal in Brazil. They take half the payment that month and the other half the next month. No interest. So just an alternative form of credit.

My credit cards give me a two month grace period before charging interest and when they do, it is just 1% to 2% per month. So hardly the stuff of nightmares.

Really, a lot of scaremongering nonsense being posted here. Would you prefer that they allowed you to put 500 baht down every month until you could afford the treat for your family? Would that make them less evil in your eyes? It's just another step in stimulating the domestic economy.

Funny stuff, and a sign of the times. So if you do not send in your meal payments,

do they hire the mafia to beat it out of you ?? Thais seem to view debt as something

they will pay when they feel like it.

For most Thais the future is tomorrow !! (after tomorrow doesn't exist)

Ask any Thai if they want 1000 baht now or 2000 baht in three days.

99% will take the 1000 baht now !!

That is why a scam like this will work !!

What a lousy comparison. "Any" Thai.... I don't know in what slum are you must live here. I only can guess with what kind of people associate. What you saying is insulting and absolutely unfair.

I can see many people now paying 1/3 for their meal and never going back! Oishi and Krungsri will write the whole debt off and the 2.5 billion baht in profit will rise. The real loser is the Thai government because it will be taxes on the profit that will be written off.

I know this takes up a lot of space - but i think its relevant here... (write-offs don't just increase profits..)

Any accountant would tell you writing off bad debts eats into paid-up capital. So, is the joke about ignorance?

Yes - the part about writing off the whole debt and profit rising.

If this desperate ploy is any indication, I can only assume their business is in the shitter….

Believe it or not, the products from this kind of company, ie food and beverages, always end up in the shitter.

That is the whole idea.

Paisarn Aosathaporn, Deputy CEO of Oishi Group, said the company had partnered with Krungsri Bank to let lower-income customers spending at least THB1,500 on a meal to pay for it in three installments without interest.

Lower income & B1500 on a meal. Is there something wrong with this picture?

I'm waiting for the next bank charge for the teller saying hello.

And if you can't pay back, they'll come for their pound of flesh.

Payday lenders...

No doubt those who can not pay on time will end up paying more, nothing more than loan shaking, the poorest will end up paying the most.

We have all meet Thai's who can not handle money... live for today, tomorrows another day. sad.png

Methinks you have all missed the point here - in business, any publicity is good publicity and this 'campaign' will surely attract very few takers as a meal for one in Oishi is hardly likely to reach 1,500 baht...

Everyone is talking about it, and that is the aim. clap2.gif

Food has become so expensive now they're letting you pay in installments for a bloody meal? blink.png

Go have a look at the Oishi buffets where you can eat unlimited for 600 baht. They are always fully booked and many lower class Thai go eat there.

Or look at MK-suki , they always have a qeueu waiting outside, even for lunch and it's expensive and you get crap quality food there.

Thank you Mr. Chef for your restaurant review. I'm sure you grew up on High Quality, Big Mac's, Pizza, KFC, Fish and Chips. Thai people are very social, they enjoy eating at restaurants. They can sit in a restaurant and eat for 2-3 hours. Their food is 10 times better then whatever country you came from. Go have another beer; and think up another comment; that is 100 % wrong !

In actual fact no. Their standard buffet is just over B 300 pp (with a membership card that costs +- B 200 per year). Thus the meal is not expensive the people don't have enough money to eat out and now they are expanding debt further to the poor.

What a shame! This is the country with abundant food available and offers to everyone for free. Sadly to borrow for your own luxury food. Rather people should try to learn how to cook simple food at home and share with family and live happily without depts.

1500 baht is around 5 days pay for Lo So Thai's. To offer this in credit for 1 meal is madness.

AND then comes the crunch :- Is Oishi going to bring in the heavies when they don't pay instalments 2 & 3.

I wouldn't like to be between those people and a 10 Satang coin.

If people can not afford to pay 1500 baht for a meal at Oishi...then feed them for free...and take a tax writeoff...instead of encouraging them to dig themselves into a deeper debt hole...

Just kidding...Oishi can not afford to feed 90% of the country...

When you buying a car, the furniture, etc. the lender is the bank and the bank pays fee to the seller of those items, since they give business. This same would probably apply to this meal deal. The borrower will have to pay those installments on time, or will face high interest rate comparable to visa. The restaurant gets all bill paid by the bank in the first place. Good business for all, but poor, or stupid and poor customer.

As they say: why is he you poor? Because he is stupid. Why is he stupid? Because he is poor.

If there was ever evidence of a credit bubble this is it.

I wonder if this fad will ever catch on at Nana Plaza?

I'd like to see this in Soi Cowboy. Paying for ST in installments? Now, that is a deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's hard to credit the stupidity that I see written here. It's not 1500 for one person, it's 1500 for one sitting. People rarely eat alone at Oishi, so a family of four is a possibility, Four people for a birthday treat or a celebration. 500 baht per month might make all the difference to someone on a tight budget.

Just a lot of insulting rubbish being posted here.

Any time you have to pay for a meal in installments then you DO NOT BELONG THERE>

I pay for my shopping with my credit card. Does it mean that I don't belong in the supermarket?

Even with the barter system, someone might do some work for you one month and you might do some work for them months later. Does that mean that that the stored credit system should be abolished and that we should return the favour immediately?

So much nonsense being written on this thread by people who cannot see beyond their noses,

No the other posters get the trap and understand it for what it is.

Yes its like paying a credit card and yes there are a couple of free installments, what will happen is most parties say doing 5 or 6k on a group meal the instalments will probably go more than 3 commonly since most Thais live from paycheck to paycheck and certainly the lower income bracket.

Its the same trap as any credit, for the majority who will always go over the allocated free interest period and into penalty territory, for most who take this up it will no doubt end up being an added cost not a saving.

There is no such thing as a free lunch and most live way above their means only because credit lets them sanuk is basically right, if they have to use instalments then they cant really afford to eat there.
