BANGKOK: -- Apiradi Tantraporn, Thailand’s Commerce Minister, announced yesterday that Thailand and Myanmar will be increasing trade investment and cooperation. Both countries hope to expand trade over the next two years, with proposals for enhanced cooperation being held on January 14 and 15. Mr. Apiradi expects trade to double in two years between Bt350 billion and Bt420 billion.

A meeting will take place with the Joint Trade Commission (JTC) to discuss the matters. The meeting will not only include the increase in trade, but also discuss logistics, cooperation amongst commercial banks, special economic zone enhancement, tourism promotion and trading farm crops.

Mr. Apiradi states that both countries will be heavily promoting increased collaboration along country borders. Cross-border commerce accounts for 80% of trade between the two countries, and an increase in private sector collaboration will help boost Thailand’s economy greatly.

Other than oil& gas and gemstones that are already being exported to Thailand, all that remains is an increase in exports would be an increase in Burmese touriists to Thailand. And no, trafficked Burmese to Thailand do not count as tourists. wai2.gif
