Lumbini Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) Dire farang health warnings : In recent years, the costs of premier inpatient care in Thailand have risen substantially and now equate with the charges in European hospitals. http://pattayatoday.net/news/latest-edition/dire-farang-health-warnings/ Edited January 18, 2016 by Lumbini
andre47 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 In many cases the costs for health treatment in private hospitals in in Thailand more expensive than in Europe.
lostinisaan Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) There's a construction worker in Ubon who had an accident where he had a hole in his skull. The lack of an adequate insrance made it happen that he's got an implant from a dog's skull. BTW, the guy's Thai. The guy's still working as a construction worker and one part of his skull is still open, only covered with skin, transplanted from his backside. He didn't start to bark yet. Asking a doctor at Bangkok Pattaya hospital how much the bill for an operation would be, might empty your wallet already. I'm doing some volunteer work for an organization, helping German guys in emergency situations and it's a sad fact that mostly older people are without any insurance. Then "using Viagra" and the heart attack is only a matter of time. I'm not allowed to talk about specific cases, but believe me there're a lot of people without an insurance around. I really don't understand foreign holiday makers who don't buy a policy good for the period of their holiday in Thailand. And that has nothing to do with age. It's common sense, a coconut could do the job. Watch out. Edited January 18, 2016 by lostinisaan
MaeJoMTB Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Most of us have free health care in Europe. So Thailand has always been more expensive.
Jingthing Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) Another reason for expats to consider nations where they can buy into the national health systems. I think Ecuador still does. The issue with private insurance here is about preexisting conditions exclusions including wildly creative ones. Edited January 18, 2016 by Jingthing
loppylugs1 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Criticisms against hospital here and run the risk of being banned from this site or criminal action, ridiculous, just like the jet ski scum. Like Topsy,it just grows and grows insurance premium and hospital care, and why should you share a insurance platform with a smoker/heavy boozer, they are more like to be wanting servicing Easy way round it India world class in every respect, cheap too. fly via KL instead of Bombay third off the price ,sometimes under a £100 return I'm off next few weeks for cancer scans etc etc

stickylies Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Most of us have free health care in Europe. So Thailand has always been more expensive. Especially when they try to sell u Scandinavian imported pills instead of Thai made which I of course refused 2000thb versus 100thb)... Of course I was called keeneeow when asking for and updated bill

You can of course do some research and identify a better Thai government hospital nearby and start using it and get known. Many have quite good services and many have very up to date equipment and specialists.
Lumbini Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) The medical help here for me has been 2nd to none and a real game changer . The cost in the US became ridicules and I am so grateful for this country . I posted this thread with the content about cost as it seemed to be missing whole story . I know Bumangrad has become more expensive over last few years but even this place and most other hospitals are well below what US medical services are . Possibly this article was the concern that farung's come unprepared and Thailand can not be responsible for giving free service to foreigners when it's already challenging to take care of their existing citizens . On another note when I think back of how much time the doctor had to spend with me in the US on an average visit and the amount of time I am giving here it is unbelievable the difference ( and how long in US I had to wait to even get appointment with top Dr. , here I can sometimes see doctor I want with no notice and just a walk in and if not the wait is never more than a few days or a week ) again so grateful for what's available here . Lumbini Posted January 18, 2016 Author Posted January 18, 2016 I guess it's because the richest nation is the sickest [emoji780]
manxninja Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Self medicate, live a healthy life and you wont need tablets for most western diseases, if you get a major illness just fly home.
elgordo38 Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I guess it's because the richest nation is the sickest [emoji780] Show me the money honey not the mountains of debt.
Jingthing Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Self medicate, live a healthy life and you wont need tablets for most western diseases, if you get a major illness just fly home. Sure but sooner or later most people's luck runs out. Accidents and stuff, etc.
Tolley Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 It doesn't matter how healthy you think you are anything can happen to anyone anytime. If you cant get medical insurance then you are probably better off not living in Thailand. This is especially the case as you get older 70 and up.
dutchisaan Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Self medicate, live a healthy life and you wont need tablets for most western diseases, if you get a major illness just fly home. And what happens, when the airline don't let you fly because you are to sick?

Some airlines will, try Air India dead, dying and whatever
soinowinbkk Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 I'd find it very helpful here to have people suggest or inform about Thai hospitals that they have had good results from. I have done some care, for instance, at Bangkok's Thai Army Hospital at Victory Monument: Parammongutkloa Hospital. For example, I had a sleep study performed (over night) for 8,000 baht, which was priced at Bumrungrad and BNH at 35,000 and 30,000 baht, respectively. English language is a challenge for most in these hospitals but not a complete barrier. Any other have experiences?

imjmn Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 A bit dated but a friend had aortic valve replacement here for a cost of about $18,500. Cost in the USA would have been in excess of $150,000. Same valve, same operating theater equipment etc - he had a US trained Thai doctor who was as conservative as possible. No fuss - no drama - ICU then a private room for about 10 days then off to the house. He went back to the USA after recovery and the US doc's told him they would have done the same just for a bunch more money. Dental cleaning at Bangkok Pattaya - 1040 Baht. Meds here are substantially less than in the USA. Yes cost have increased. You have to be prepared. When I go to the USA my wife and I purchase a BUPA package for emergency care. It just makes sense to be sure that you are protected as a home country social scheme may not cover you. MJ

If I buy in USA through my prescription plan and copay, or just buy over the counter here and pay myself, the cost is about the same on a monthly basis. But here I can buy in the quantity I want. Typically that is 6 months supply. When I see my doctor for the yearly check he asks if I need a prescription or will I buy in Thailand.
