Sourdough bread... where's the good stuff?

Suggestions and comments on where to get the freshest and best sourdough bread in Pattaya, Jomtien, Naklua and the 'burbs? I dropped by Best at Dolphin as they have a broad range of German breads but curiously no sourdough. Maybe I was too early and before the shelves were restocked?

Thanks,

Best supermarket at Dolphin roundabout, Naklua Rd junction.

I got some good pain de campagne from there yesterday and their range of breads is decent.

Both the Villa and the Friendship supermarkets stock good sourdough bread. Where is the Dolphin ?

Thanks RAZ. I find that Villa stock such a small selection, getting what you want is a bit hit-and miss. Friendship does have a bigger bakery department so a better option I reckon. Dolphin roundabout where north-end of 2nd Road meets Naklua Road and North Pattaya Road. Best supermarket is just up the North Pattaya Road from the roundabout, left side. Good sized bakery selection.

Thanks tolsti. I was there at 9 a.m. Wednesday and there was some restocking needed. I will check later today.

I did a quick search and apparently the Big C Extra bakery section makes a round, country sourdough bread. Well, they did a few years back.

I doubt they have the real stuff.

I have been there many times and was not really impressed.

The dark bread is usually just "colored", fake.

I am quite sure there will also be German type bakeries at Naklua.

But the address that I knew ("Baecker Naree" ex. "Baecker Peter" near Naklua Soi 12) is probably not worth going anymore as the German boss separated?

I haven't checked for a long time.

Go and have a look?:

Tops in the basement of Central has some good bread, albeit somewhat pricey. Whether any of it could be properly considered to be sour-dough would depend on individual tastes. Worth a look though, if nearby.

I find the bread at TOPS is cheaper than some of the other places, as they make theirs in house, as do Big C.

I rarely look at bread in places that dont make it themselves so you're probably right. BigC also does a sour dough, if I remember correctly.

As KK says, Big C Extra n Pattaya Central Road does a sour dough round...it's about 90 baht or so and very good. There are two types of bread rounds they bake so be sure to check the tag for the "sourdough" one. Buy that and some of the French butter they sell and you'll be in heaven...in fact I'm getting hungry now just thinking about it.

Second choice would Best in Naklua...decent selection of french bread...sliced and rolls but not really sourdoughs.

This was at 1800 last evening. It made good toast this morning. Next I will try their pain rustique.

Best still hadn't restocked at noon yesterday so I didn't bother them with a third visit, same day. On the list for 'maybe next time if I am in the area'.

Back Fabrik, German bakery on Jomtien 2nd road.

Not cheap.

...

Funnily enough, I had a canceled business lunch date for this place yesterday. I heard their menu is decent too. Thanks for the tip.

Quickest option was to grab one from Big C Extra on Klang. They had loads of them with all sorts flavors but apart from some huge sourdough sticks, I think I got the last regular round for 56 baht.

The french baker on soi 89, had some last week that he was testing with some of his customers, I tried it and it was good although not my type of bread. He will cook to order/amount/time etc. Very good crusty rolls, Baguettes & ciabatta! highly recommended!!! Name of shop 'La Baguette 89 Bakery' , 200m past railway line on right hand side on soi 89 Sukhumvit or soi Greenway as some people call it.

I'd forgotten about those big sticks. I've had them and they are very good.

Just went to the Pinocchio bakery place on Kow Noi...whoever recommended the place...thanks for nothing.

As written just "heard of". Not seen on my own.

Nothing? Nothing at all or no sourdough?

It's basically a german bakery and restaurant...they had some interesting breads, including oatmeal and pumpkin along with basic whites and browns but didn't see any sourdough breads rolls or loafs. ermm.gif

Thais who produce food just can't understand that some people have allergies and eating disorders. I've had really good sourdough bread from Festival Supermarket and other outlets at times and when I've returned to these places I've found the sourdough bread loaded up with sugar. After a few slices I thought my head was going to explode. I've tried many places over several years and I given up. Thais never stick to procedures as they have their own take on everything.

Sporadically I have found good breads in Foodmart (by the airport bus terminal - Jomtien).

Have also found some "imports" from Bangers in Foodmart,

ie imports from Bei Otto in soi 20/Sukhumvit.

Bei Otto sports a fair amount of decent bread. Surely EMS shipments can be arranged.

Wouldn't trust shops like BigC, Villa, Foodland, they often pack their fresh breads in tight plastic bags,

tight plastic bags is not a good way to treat freshly baked breads.

FWIW, the sourdough at Big C in Udon Thani wholeheartedly beats the sourdough at Big C Klang.

Interesting and surprising.

Does the BigC in Udon have a French baker in charge as the one at Klang does?

I doubt it. Very small bakery section and most of it is the sweet stuff that the locals like; banana cake, donuts, twists, mini pizza's and the like. The French Ball is also quite good and there's a couple of other darker, nutty ones but I don't fancy crunchy loaf much.

The brownies at Tops here are really good as as the ones at the local Makro. The latter garners a huge crowd as they announce it over the tannoy and they usually sell out in 15 minutes as they take the huge sheets of hot brownies fresh from the ovens, cut them up and box them. I have found they go splendidly with some Devon (or Fosters) custard.

When i was a kid in the UK we used to get a loaf that in Lancashire we called a Banjo loaf.

It was wonderful

Soft on the inside & quite soft on the outside.

You could just cut a slice off & butter it.

I have never been able to find it anywhere else.

Dont realy know what the propper name is.

Just fond memories of an old man.

The German bakery Bei Otto can be trusted for quality bread. They deliver to Friendship and Villa Market. Or you can order directly.

I have a rather serious food allergy and I found the best bread for me is tagged " COUNTRY SOURDOUGH BREAD " After looking everywhere my best choice is Big C Klang or Big C 2nd road. I must admit the 2nd road location has limited stock. For several years I used to buy my sourdough bread in Festival but like most things  in  Thailand they have their own take on everything and I started getting a severe reaction so I changed with excellent results. It's like large bun but the staff will slice it for you if that's what you desire. Best of luck.
