BANGKOK: -- As the drought in several upper central provinces is deteriorating, the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation yesterday began artificial rain mission to ease the situation.

Two Casa aircraft yesterday were flown on a special rainmaking operation in the central plain province of Nakhon Sawan to add water to dams in the province.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will visit drought-hit Nakhon Sawan and Chai Nat provinces tomorrow to follow up progress of the government’s drought relief measures.

He will also use the opportunity to meet with local farmers who have been affected by the drought.

Drought has come early this year with now nearly all provinces are feeling impact of the drought.

The Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation said the rainmaking mission was the first mission this year.

It intended to help farmers along the Chao Phraya River basin and to increase water level at dams and reservoirs in the region.

Water levels in major dams such as the Pa Sak Jolasid dam, the Vajiralongkorn dam and the Tap Sa Lao dam now have lower water levels than in the same period last year.

The mission was successful with rainfalls reported in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat and Lopburi.

Petchabun and Chaiyapoom provinces also received the raindrops with the help of the wind.

Meanwhile, drought situation in the central province of Sukhothai has reached a critical level. The Yom river is drying and all its water is expected to be gone in 70 days.

Some 400,000 rai of off-season rice plantations have been damaged by the drought.

Heck, it rained here in western Bangkok last night. Guess that was due to the rainmaking hundreds kilometers north. Yea, right.

Poor farmers! 400,000 rai of off season is ice plantations have been damaged. It occurs to me that these owners of the 400,000 rai went against orders not to plant off season rice and therefore should be held accountable and forced to pay for the water that will be needed to replaced what they have used for their illegal crops.

Rain forecast for the North on Sunday/Monday. A good time to start the rainmaking activities would be Friday, a great chance of them working then.

Looking at the weather map over near China ,high pressure , pushing rain to Thailand,

may have had something to do with the rain, Maybe ?

Reminds me of an old movie , black and white job ,( i can not remember the name ) where this kids farther was ridiculed for saying he could seed the clouds and make it rain, and of course while in the air and after landing the rain started , the newspapers and people called him hero, then as often happens in movies , the rain never stopped!

So now the towns people were dealing with floods and turned on the rain maker to stop the floods , how nasty , still it was only a movie,

No rain in Nakhon Sawan and the river CP is lower than I ever seen it, it did get a bit dark yesterday though. No rain here for 3 months.

Reading the above comments it seems like none of you have ever heard of Cloud Seeding. It is in fact an actual science although not that effective yet. However over time it could possibly be improved on and yield better results. In fact it is used in many parts of the world and I think the king actually has a patent on a technique he was developing many years ago.

Maybe time to bring in some Hopi Indians.. They seem to have the knack for bringing rain.. Oh sorry, I forgot, farang. coffee1.gif

So why don't they fly to Sukhothai and see if this works? Oh, ... because it doesn't.

You can see these planes take off when it is about to rain in Khon Kaen and fly low over populated areas perpetuating the myth.

Far from the truth , we are all worldly persons , have open minds , open to others opinions even if we disagree with them,

The moral of this story is about the "claim of who achieved the rain fall "

The American indian's could make it rain without the use of aircraft......maybe the American indian's can't get work permits???

We cannot see any planes in sukhothai as they burn every thing but we did get a good down pour last night, I think it had something to do with articles 44,sorry I meant 555.thais don't have weather forecasts ,so they don't know it's going to rain next week.

Of course they can't! That would be taking a job away from a Thai!!!

...and here, ladies and gentlemen, comes the argument to end all arguments!

Perhaps a bit off topic but are they using this time, when the rivers are empty anyways, to clean them up thoroughly for all the rubbish thrown into the rivers? Seems to me this would be a great time to improve the rivers' quality both in terms of flow and environment?

Have you done any research on cloud seeding lately?

The moral of this story is "try to understand your subject before posting".

Sometimes it lets people know that you think before you post.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4358535.stm

Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej is to oversee personally an artificial rain-making project in a bid to end a severe drought in the country.

He is expanding a cloud-seeding technique he patented in 2002, which involves aircraft releasing a chemical into clouds to induce rainfall.

He suggested the idea as most of Thailand's 76 provinces face their worst drought for several years.

There is much more out on the internet if only you bother to look.
