Just realised I can import one of these 50% cheaper than I can buy here. I realize warranty etc void.

Anyone bring one from the states and using a step down transformer successfully?

Just be aware if motor is AC the speed will likely be about 20% lower due to use on 50hz power and life will likely be shorter due to excessive heat generated by motor if not rated 50/60hz (cheaper construction for 60hz).

pretty sure kitchenaid mixers are DC motor

The lower-end Kitchenaids like the artisan are AC

How come they are rated so low at 300w where other much cheaper and seemingly less powerful machines rated at 600w plus? Is it in the gearing or smoke and mirrors with the numbers

To be quite honest, when you add up the cost of a converter (and the risk of forgetting to use it), shipping, potential VAT and duty, it may be as well buying one here.

USA 300W at 110V = 2.7 max running current (the driving force), Thailand 600W at 220V= 2.7A so same driving current for the different voltages.

I ended up buying an Andrew James 5.2 Litre machine off Ebay for 7000THB inc import tax and shipping. These are a highly praised / reviewed machine and at the same price I'd buy a bloody Houseworth or other rubbishy brand here. Good thing is from the UK so voltage will be ok.

Be looking at Ebay a bit harder in the future. Past I been stung with incredulous import taxes but most international sellers now you can pay tax upfront so no nasty surprises.

I don't have a clue what the means but I believe you. Off to wikipedia for an explanation now. Comments like yours make thaivisa so worthwhile.

I wouldn't recommend the cheaper kitchenaids for bread. They have plastic gears and don't do well against bread dough. For about 8000 baht more than for an artisan you can get a 5 liter Varimixer which will probably last you your lifetime. It can go up against any kind of dough you pit it against, even bagel and pretzel doughs. When I bought one here about a year ago it cost 35000 baht. What's also nice about it is that where the attachments join to the mixer it's completely sealed so dough can't crawl up into the guts of the machine. But it sure ain't cheap.

I saw a cracking looking quality 10L machine in the bakery supply shop Khon Kaen (next to Fairy Plaza) for 28k THB. Not sure if varimix or not but it really was a nice looking professional machine. They do a 5L smaller model for 20k THB as well. By the by, Lazada have a Kitchenaid Proline 6.9L 500w semi pro machine now for 26kTHB. Really good price for Thailand about 40% discount. Cheaper than an Artisan!

I bought my daughter a Kitchenaid Artisan stand mixer for Christmas, and I have to say it's awesome, it cost $250. I haven't seen anything close to it under ฿30k here in Thailand.

Actually the kitchenaid proline cited by Kenny202 right above your post is a far superior machine. And I've seen plenty of kitchenaid artisans for sale here in Thailand under 30,000. In fact, I've never seen one for sale for as much as 30000.

I found it on Lazada but one thing troubles me: it's only got a 15 day guarantee. This means itps probably being sold via the gray market. Not by an authorized agent for Kitchenaid.

Are we talking the same thing here?

This is the mixer I bought my daughter from Amazon in the US, and the same from Lazada, not quite ฿30K, but close..

27k thb on Lazada and still way too much. Like I said if someone had plenty of cash and wants Kitchenaids most powerful, 6.9L DC motor unit....26k thb on Lazada now. That IS a bargain.
