phu nam ron/htee khee border crossing open? Please confirm!

Featured Replies

i get conflicting info and may be the situation has changed. I am Australian passport holder.

a few blogs on the net suggest that people have crossed the border phu nam ron/htee khee 12-18 month ago and continued to Dawei, which is my plan.

the government website

http://www.mip.gov.mm/portfolio/permission-of-entry-into-and-departure-from-myanmar-thai-border-gates/

also states the border is open

(a) Tachilek – Maisai

(B) Myawaddy – Mesok

© Htee Kee – Phunaron

(d) Kawthoung – Ranong

but my friend was told by an official from the Myanmar government that only those land crossings are open

  • Muse (Shan State) – Ruili (China border)
  • Tamu (Sagaing Region) – Morei (India border)
  • Tachilek (Shan State) – Mae Sai (Thailand border)
  • Myawaddy (Kayin State) – Mae Sot (Thailand border)
  • Tiki (Tanintharyi Region) – Sunarong (Thailand border)
  • Kawthoung (Tanintharyi Region) – Ranong (Thailand border)

Phu Nam Ron is open as usual.

The only possible issue may be for visa runners who may or may not be allowed through in order to come back to Thailand on a new visa free stay. For everyone else heading into Myanmar or coming back into Thailand after having stayed in Myanmar on an embassy issued visa (or visa exemption for certain nationalities), no problem.

BTW the Chinese and Indian borders are closed, unless you have a permit.

Only 4 Thai-Myanmar border crossings are open to foreigners/Thais/Burmese holding valid passports provided their documents are in order:

Mae Sot/Myawady (Tak/Kayin)

Mae Sai/Tachilek (Chiang Rai/Shan)

Phu Nam Ron/Thee Khee (Kanchanburi/Thanintharyi)

Ranong/Kawthoung (Ranong/Thanintharyi)

All other border crossings are only for locals and only allow limited access into each other's country mainly for trading purposes. It is not legal to continue further than the designated areas.
