YANGON: -- Myanmar still languishes among the world’s most corrupt countries although its performance has improved slightly over the past year, according to a global review released yesterday, The Myanmar Times reported.

Berlin-based graft monitor Transparency International said that with a better score on perceived levels of public sector corruption, Myanmar matched a worldwide trend that overall saw more steps forward than back.

Myanmar came in 147th place out of 168 countries and territories graded on apparent prevalence of public sector corruption. Scored on a scale of zero to 100, with higher marks pointing to cleaner governance, Myanmar earned 22 points – one point better than in 2014.

Myanmar also scored a 21-point grade in 2013, up from a 15 point score in 2012’s grading, reflecting some improvements made under President U Thein Sein’s reformist administration.

Myanmar ranks alongside Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and slightly better than Berundi, Cambodia and Zimbabwe. The world’s five least-corrupt countries were listed as Denmark, Finland, Sweden, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
