Plate Glass Windows For House...Good Idea?

So I want to replace the single-pane aluminium fra me slider windows in my house to increase the sound proofing and air-tightness of my home. Of course, there is the option of double-pane metal or pvc windows.

However, as the windows are all metal barred and are never opened due to heat, noise, and dust issues, I figure why not just install plate glass windows. I'm always amazes when inside a shop with these in front and a bus or truck goes roaring by and one hears almost nothing.

I figure these are fairly cheap and easy to install as not much hardware is required other than the frames. Has anyone done this already...are there drawbacks I'm overlooking?

If you were to do this make sure they is no direct sun as this will heat up the glass which will be retained for a long time well after the sun has moved.

Second problem exit in an emergency.

I don't think glass is a good material in general for any hot country.

Already made that mistake in my last house.

As mentioned, the windows have security bars already so use as emergency exits is already moot. However, your mention of heat retention is a concern...is plate glass a heat retaining material?

All glass will pass some sound different thickness of glass pass different frequencies so you could do as we will and that is get different thickness laminated. You can also get low-E glass here that is effective.

You can always tell the farang houses: they always have lots of windows! If you have experience of hot climates, windows let in lots of sunlight and heat up the house. The locals dont bother with alot of windows. Thinking about our bedroom, which has a glass tinted window: we never open the curtains as the sunlight is too bright and that side of the house gets the sun in the afternoon.

Put some solar / uv film on the glass and at least you cannopen the curtains :-)
