Turkey lashes out over UN demands to open Syria border to refugees

ANKARA: -- A war of words has intensified over Turkey’s decision to keep its border closed to tens of thousands of Syrians fleeing violence in Aleppo.

Aid trucks are crossing to the Syrian side with supplies for victims of what the Turkish Prime Minister has called ethnic cleansing.

The United Nations and European Union have urged Turkey to open its border.

But Turkish premier Ahmet Davutoglu, speaking in The Hague, said it was hypocritical of those who have failed to stop Russian air strikes in Syria to now ask Turkey to open its doors, stressing that the country has taken in over 2.6 million refugees during the five-year war.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also slammed the UN on Wednesday, saying that Turkish spending on food, accommodation and medical care for refugees living in camps had reached $10 billion, while the United Nations had provided just $455 million.

Turkey has done more than its fair share. Taking in over 2 million refugees was a gutsy, and courageous act, and an extraordinary act of generosity. One that the Saudis, the Omanis, the Yemenis, the UAE, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, or Egypt will never be accused of!

The UN should stop criticizing Turkey, and start doing some real work, and coming up with some real solutions, something it is not accustomed to doing.

In the mean time Dubai is building super luxurious hotels for the rich and famous.

Please call me a socialist.

hypocrites. EU demanded the same as well.

they did nothing for millions of immigrant over how many years and now, they raise their voices to blame other countries for not allowing migrants! funny.

they blamed Turkey for not closing their borders last months and now they say they need to open the borders!

i believe best for Turkey is refusing the money coming from EU and opening their western borders to allow all those Syrians and migrants to travel Europe freely.

if that is what UN or EU wants!

moreover, there are 100 000 Syrians waiting at the Turkish border now and that is due to the current civilian bombings of Russia at Aleppo. If UN or EU wants to do something, they can tell Russia to stop the bombings of civilians or they can create a no fly zone around these areas so countries can create safe havens for Syrians immigrants at their own country.

on top of that, they caught 34 migrants a day ago trying to cross Turkish border with explosive vests bad other bomb making material so this clearly threatens the national security of their country. so it is up to Turks to open their borders or not.
