BANGKOK, 15 February 2016 (NNT) – The Civil Court has ordered core leaders of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) to compensate the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for the damage they caused during demonstrations.

The Court today convened a hearing on a case filed by the DSI against five defendants who are core leaders of the PDRC. The five consist of Luang Pu Buddha Issara, Maj Gen Somkiat Wattanatokkit, Mr Chumpol Jullasai, Mr Nitithorn Lamluea and Ms Anchalee Paireerak.

The Court viewed that the group’s anti-government protests between December 23, 2013 and May 28, 2014 rendered the DSI headquarters inaccessible, prompting the department to have to rent a temporary office space from TOT Public Company Limited. The rental cost the DSI a large amount of money, and the judges held the five core leaders accountable for the expense.

Luang Pu Buddha Issara and Maj Gen Somkiat were ordered to pay a combined 890,000 baht. Mr Chumpol is to pay 360,000 baht while another 180,000 baht is under the joint responsibility of Mr Nitithorn and Ms Anchalee. The Court also imposed an interest rate of 7.5 percent per annum, which brought the total amount of compensation to be paid to the DSI to over 1.5 million baht.
