Yingluck stands trial at Supreme Court for dereliction of duty

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions today began the second hearing of the controversial rice-pledging scheme with former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra standing trial for dereliction of duty.

The trial today saw Ms Yingluck and her team of lawyers appearing before the panel of nine judges to defend her.

Ms Yingluck arrived at 9 am at the court amid warm welcome by about 300 supporters who included some former MPs of the Pheu Thai part chanting “Yingluck Soo Soo” to give her morale boost.

The Office of the Attorney-General which charged her for dereliction of duty that inflicted immense damages to the country of over 500 billion baht acted on behalf of the National Ant-Corruption Commission.

The office prepared four state witnesses for the Supreme Court to question over the charge imposed on Ms Yingluck. They included Ms Supha Piyajitti, commissioner of NACC and former head of the accounting assessment subcommittee, Ms Nengnoi Charoenthawisap, an auditor.

The Supreme Court allowed altogether 17 state witnesses to testify in the case, while Ms Yingluck was given permission to bring 42 witnesses to defend her.

The court has set the last session of the hearing of Ms Yingluck on November 18 from a total of 16 hearings, beginning April 1.

For the accuser, the court permitted five hearings beginning January 15. The last hearing is scheduled on March 23.

I've met her on Thai love and sink.

Your Honour, "A chairwoman who does not chair meetings is not dereliction".

Get ready to walk that Green Mile. lock.gif

The same rent a crowd in this photo , but something amiss no flowers in this shot,

Wonder if the 17 Thai and foreign lawyers attended?

"...former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra standing trial for dereliction of duty."

I wonder what an army chief that has overthrown an elected government should stand trial for? Oh, wait a minute, he has given himself an amnesty!

Corruption is a crime, we all know that.

But being a lousy leader and politician, isn't that the norm here?

I wonder what an army chief that has overthrown an elected government should stand trial for? Oh, wait a minute, he has given himself an amnesty!

Can you "overthrow" a government no longer in office? Are you against all governments giving themselves amnesty, or do you reserve that for military government?

"Can you "overthrow" a government no longer in office?"

Yes, you can overthrow a caretaker government that was trying to hold elections. Is that difficult for you to grasp?

Although I agree with you in principle, you may be accused of using the ."......but,but Prayuth.." refrain, as many do when the subject is Suthep, Abhisit and others.

If Prayuth has done wrong, there will come a time when that subject can be discussed. As of now, the subject is Yingluck and her trial.

I wonder what an army chief that has overthrown an elected government should stand trial for? Oh, wait a minute, he has given himself an amnesty!

And I wonder what an ex Prime Minister that has attempted to bribe court officials with cash filled pastry boxes should stand trial for? Oh, wait a minute, he has fled the country!

You see we could play this game all day of lamenting those who have escaped justice, but if every time someone is actually made to answer for their actions, we say, "ah yes, but what about so and so... why is it that he/she gets off but this one doesn't", well then we'll forever be stuck in the same vicious circle of nobody ever being convicted.

Besides, what are you worried about? Yingluck will never actually face punishment no matter what the outcome.

She can say for her defense that she was under orders from her brother, and that she's now been made the scapegoat,

the real culprit is not in the country, sitting in his hideaway in Dubai.....

Meanwhile, back in Thai justiceland, a former PM an Deputy PM who ordered the army to crack down on protesters and cause 99 deaths, including foreign press, nurses and other civilians inside a wat, were cleared of wrongdoing by the Criminal Supreme Court on a technicality.

TV Anti-Thaksinistas OCDers (OCD: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) celebrate now, as they celebrated the2006 coup and this one.

Yep, their turn will come as amnesty can surely be revoked when the time is right?

Unfortunately she can't send everybody to attitude adjustment who says she stole money from Thais

Got a big agenda with new deformation for Xmas?

Case was dismissed as it was sent to the wrong court....

Defense appealed. Appeal court confirmed the case was sent to the wrong court and uphold the original verdict..

Biased much are we?

Don't bother arguing with these geniuses. In their bizarro world the Thai military never grabs power illegally. They say the same thing about the coup which deposed Thaksin, ie there was no government in office at the time.

When challenged they regurgitate yet again the constitutional process with which we are all familiar.Difficult to know who they think their audience is since the rest of the world knows their silly and transparent games.I suppose - ignoring the dishonesty involved - it's the old story of the slug crawling across the mosaic without understanding the overall pattern.

Unfortunately she can't send everybody to attitude adjustment who says she stole money from Thais

She doesn't have to. Bribery will get her all the witnesses she needs

What a Dog and Pony show Whether you like or Dislike Yingluk this charge of Dereliction of Duty is ridiculous . First if the charge stands who in their right mind is going to want to hold public office who has a good background NOBODY. Second I do not know any country where you can hold a member of an elected government for dereliction of duty. If that was the case you

would have had OBAMA in Jail a long long time ago\

But, but Prayuth. Pretty sure the army or the general aren't the topic. Never stopped you before though.

I have never said that Yingluck was corrupt, never seen any evidence that she was involved or gained anything from thr rice scheme. Negligent is a different story, two clear choices, negligent or stupid, take your choice.

Yesss, so well said, my thoughts exactly.....

Best regards.

Shes not a scapegoat - a scapegoat is someone fingered for doing something they were not guilty of. She was more than guilty when she became her Brother's latest 'nominee' to get him his prized but still out-of-reach amnesty.

He may have been the instigator of his 'bird-brained' schemes but she was the operator and must face the consequences!!

Not by any means a fan of the Shins. But are we to believe that she alone is responsible for this colossal mountain of dereliction?

It's hard to imagine that she had the energy or the intelligence to pull off all her crimes single-handedly.

And it's unlikely that while she was running amok everyone else in government was honestly hard at work doing good deeds on behalf of the people

So....where are her co-conspirators? Where all the other derelicts?

It would appear others are entitled to share the consequences of this malfeasance.

The establishment was trying to pile on the pressure and hoping she will do a runner. Glad she didn't and confronting the group that has an agenda to rid her and her family through the courts and agencies. She will not receive the same lenency treatment accorded to friends of establishment. Good luck to her.

She no needs bribery, she was PM of Thailand at that time.Abisit and Suthep got of the hook for murder and attempted murder because they were the government.

But Sawasdee double standard,They will do same as they did with her brother.

A little hard to do a runner when she was being refused to leave the country and she was being followed all the time.

They will love to see her do a runner in the early stage which will help justify the coup. But at the later stage when she repeatedly said in defiance that she will stay and fight the charges, the junta government realized that granting her permission to go abroad and she returning will become a big embarrassment. I am sure the junta would close an eye and allow her to "escape" and they will be much relieved.

No choice, both are relevant.
