Real Mash potato in Ubon Ratchathani

Recommended Posts

On Friday night I had dinner at Risotto. They served, as usual, mash potato with the fish I ordered. The mash potatoes were excellent. I asked the cook whether or not he used real mash potatoes. He was taken back. Of course he said. I even went into the kitchen to have a look at peeled potatoes being mashed up. From memory I think Risotto first opened up about 1998 in a location up the street from Wrong Way bar. Later on when Peter who had the Italian Pizza restaurant near the Laithong hotel decided to return to Bangkok they took over his location from where they operated for many years. Now Risotto is in a small soi across Chaiyangyun road from the Poly Tech.

So there you are. Real mash potatoes at Risotto. Over the next few months when I eat out, I will continue to inquire about real mash potatoes in Ubon and post according my findings. This should be of interest to those that advertise food at certain restaurants in Ubon Ratchathani.

That is not so hard to believe. Mash potato powder is hell expensive and what do potatoes cost in Thailand.

Good ones for making mashed potatoes as well and it is in fact the hands and mind of the Chef that do the wonder.

Some butter, some milk or cream, pepper salt and nutmeg and there you are.

I like it if the potatoes are not mashed like a pudding. Some bits here and there and you also know that it's made of real potatoes.

Never use the hand blender.

Yes, expensive. How many servings you think a Chef can make out of that 115 Baht pack and considering a kilo of potatoes in Thailand cost only 30 Baht.

With standard gross margin calculations your cheap pack will do about 100 Baht per person on the menu, depending on class of restaurant. That is way to expensive.

Imagine two people eat 115 baht potatoes, that's almost the price of one kilo of pork. Bit out of balance wouldn't you say so?

Besides, quality is not even close to home made mashed potatoes.

I make my own mashed potatoes at home , one of the easiest dishes to make . Potatoes only 30 baht per kilo . Add milk and butter and you're ready. I think most restaurants here would not dare to use powder.

N'Joy only use real, peeled potatoes for their Mash in their Sunday Lunch etc.

With all the minor problems in Ubon, such as subsiding roads, land price rises, the Bronchial virus, it's great that we are all banding together to address the real, major current issue of potato content in Mash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life is good!!

That 115 Baht pack will make me about 4 - 5kg of firm mashed potato.

A serving in a restaurant is about 200 gram, that means 20 -25 servings, or about 5 Baht per serving, instead of 100 Baht.

Let's move on... Harder to find is good potato salad. The wife had to give tater salad classes to the local friends.

Hey Marty ..... Peppers potato salad is delicious

Would expect it to be so, given Julian's German heritage; haven't tried it yet though.

Germany makes the best potato salad IMO - knocks my perfectly acceptable home-made one* into a cocked hat. Must look up on the internet what is the ingredient that gives it that typical delicious piquancy.

*good waxy old potatoes or fresh baby new potatoes (not available here of course) good mayonnaise and no yukky peas or other veggies, except spring onions/scallions or shallots

500 g of potato powder gives that much yield? Sorry, I stand corrected. Hurry to Big C now I guess. Thanks.

5 baht is only cost price, so still have to do a mark up. But let's say 15 baht compared to 100 baht is enormous.

I was going from 500 gram ready MP per serving. 200 is a bit low and I am to high possibly and I was of the opinions that the powder would only double in weight when ready.

Ok, I get me that Casino stuff.

I just checked as I made mashed potato this evening.

For one person I always use 36 gram of powder, using plain water, and that results in 267 gram finished and firm mash.

I assume that if i use milk the same amount of powder can have a heavier end result with the same firmness.

This cannot be possible.

As you know Mr Hare, me we were informed just recently that there is only one restaurant that serves real mash potato in the entire city of Ubon Rathchathani.

As a result said restaurant was awarded with the amazing accolade of being called 'The number 1 restaurant in Ubon'.

How dare you go and try and sully their obviously good name. Next thing you will be telling me us they don't actually have the best Thai food in the entire country and that they never did actually win 'multiple awards'.

Scandalous. Simply scandalous.

The OP was about Mash potato in Ubon R, right?. I haven't found a better home made potato salad in lower northeast than the one at Peppers in 15 years.

Your post is the only confusing thing.

If you want Real Mashed Potato and you are in Mukdahan, then go to The Waterfront-Song Fung Khong Restaurant, also known as Mr Don's. You can have it with NZ Lamb Chops, Aussie Steak or Norweigan Salmon. Whatever you so desire.

There is plenty of decent mashed potato all over Ubon town.

It just seems that katareya2006 is a little confused..... which is understandable when you forget that you actually own the same restaurant that you are reviewing.

katareya2006 - please come and join the conversation.

You are being very optimistic MeMock that katareya2006 will join the conversation. He won't have time with peeling all those potatoes to make real mash and replying to comments on Tripadvisor.
