"I'm from the UK and I've been withdrawing 10,000 baht each time from the ATM's when running low on cash.
This would convert to pretty much £200 exactly....."

No, it is not.

Or do you really expect to not incur any foreign exchange fees?

When I was 15 years old, I knew that withdrawing in different currency would be extra 2-3% in forex fees and I even failed math in school.

Seriously, where do you people come from?

So, 2% from your typical ATM rate would cost you close to 6 pounds (more is using a credit card).

add another 4 pounds (200b) from the Thai side = 10 pounds already.

+ whatever your UK bank charges you to withdraw money.... I guess it's 6 pounds.

It pays off to do some research before you actually move because now it's too late.

When I was poor, I used to bring traveler's checks to Thailand as the fees were lower and exchange rate pretty decent.

Next time just bring cash.

Krungsri allows easy up to 30.000 withdrawal , of course it depends on the limit you domestic bank has put on your card. As a bonus - when you use krungsri you can change the atm-receipt for 1 free coca cola in family mart :)

Citibank has no fee on the Thai side (for most european nationals) - but (in my case) a slightly higher fee from my domestic bank (but combined it was still less than other thai banks) and also allow 30.000 withdrawals

Thai ATM machines charge between 0 -200 Baht to make foreign withdrawals .

I Dont think the words "insanely expensive " or "extortion" are appropriate in this situation .

ATM machines cost money to make maintain and to run , its quite acceptable that you must pay part of the cost, if you want to use one

Have you considered walking into the bank and making a withdrawal from a real living teller?

No ATM fees inside!

I tried a few times- they tell you to use the ATM outside

What has been described in other threads.

At the counter with a debit card: no thanks.

With a credit card: maybe, thank you and pay at home (interest for cash advance, exchange fee etc.).

Thai banks are not that stupid to offer for free what costs 200 Baht at the ATM.

How about words like maybe a ....hummmmm a 'banking cartel' ?

Those two words mean absolutely nothing in a post, you really need to add a few more words to make a point, maybe even a whole sentence , to get your point acros

you are completely wrong!

When i use my credit card i have to pay 3 euro + 3% (of the amount i withdraw) + 200 baht.

So i did ask my foreign bank why i do have to pay so many time. Their answer was i got extorted by the thai bank!

The fee 3 euro + 3 % are shared between my foreign bank , visa compagny and the thai bank.

But the thai bank are so greedy that they charge you, on top, 200 baht more, thats a daylight robbery!!!

In other words, the thai bank get paid twice

Complete bs.

Your foreign bank is charging you 3 euros and are sharing it with a Thai bank. How nice of them and you fell for it.

no they share 3 euro + 3 % between my foreign bank, visa system and the thai bank. There is nothing surprising... 3 entities provide you a service, you have to pay a fee.

They can't give me BS, i signed a contract with my foreign bank, they have liability. In Europe a contract means something...in

thailand you are just a farang sheep. I repeat the thai bank get paid twice...

as i said i travel a lot, and i really mean a lot, and i dont pay extra fee... except in thailand, the land of scamwhistling.gif

Quite simply, a bit of research would have done you the world of good.

A Clarity credit card from the Halifax has no transaction fees around the world. You go to an FX booth with your credit card + passport and withdraw the cash. No ATM fees involved and no % mark up.

Short term you can try the banks, or FX booths (bank related) - preferably with a credit card - and withdraw more funds at less cost. The banks do not like it, but they (some) will do this. Take out 100K or 50K. Keep it safe.

Thanks for this. I had no idea you could withdraw money using a credit card at the foreign exchange booths with no charge.

Not everyone realises that many UK banks charge a "non-sterling transaction fee" often around 3% , so you will be stung for that even if you do the teller withdrawal method. ATM fee also applies. So if you were with one of the worst, Clydesdale/Yorkshire using a debit card in an ATM would cost you a combined 6.5% . Really worth taking a good look at this guide and sorting out some better options of which there are many.

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/overseas-card-charges

One of my UK cards had a fixed charge plus a percentage (2 or 3%), the other just a fixed charge...... but it worked out expensive.

Thai banks just copied that idea and we end up with a substantial total on a rather limited withdrawal amount

Even travellers cheques are subject to the larger Thai end charge now.

A Thai bank account seemed wise many years ago and strangely, the cost of the transfer to Thailand has fallen in recent times.

The 200 Baht fee is per transaction.

So don't do these small withdrawals but do 25000 or 30000 Baht at once with the same fee.

Bangkok Bank allows 25k, Krungsri allows 30k per transaction.

The other banks that allow 30k? Forgot. It's in other threads.

TMB? (30K on international withdrawals).

BTW. Krugsri have a 10k limit on certain cards.

TMB is always the worst in exchange rates, see Thai Baht Exchange app for comparison. Today all banks are between 38.51 to 38.23 to the Euro and TMB 37.42.

HSBC charges just £4.00 to transfer funds to a Thai bank. Open a Thai account and get a Thai bankbook and or ATM card. Nationwide charges £20 for a swift transfer. (Too much imo)

Bangkok Bank has a branch in London I believe and they are an option to explore too. It is doable and will save you loads .

The OP is still here for some months it seems. So the solution is to go open a Thai bank account and then get his UK bank to SWIFT across (many can be done online now) £10,000 or whatever and then the job is done.

I suggest 2 x Thai accounts. The first one is your ATM account and you only keep Bt50k or so in it and the second is your non ATM account (or at least you never carry the ATM card) where you keep the rest. If you ever lose the card, you can only lose whatever is in the smaller balance account.

I use a Norwich and Peterborough account Atm withdrawals and all transactions are free... Anywhere in the world. Still get stung for the 200baht Atm fee..

I also use a Lloyds international account to make regular large transfers as required which are also free always send in UK pounds and get best exchange rate when it's changed here by my Siam bank.. And you can see online what rate it will be on Siam web site by checking the TT rate telegraphic transfer. Which they take a very tiny percentage in commission but it's still better than any other method. Ie rate is around 50.3 today so I will probably get 50.1

I used to the that, and had done for about 3 yeas, but two months ago I was charged 2.5% plus the visa charge. When I challenged my bank in the UK I was told this was correct and fees had been applied since 2010. I now transfer cash via SWIFT for my needs of 6 months and this works out cheaper for me.

I find that the ATM's limit my withdrawal to 20,000 Baht per day, although the card limit is much higher.

Whether with foreign or Thai bank card.

That's not true for Thai bank ATM cards in general.

Never had a problem to withdraw at least twice 25k at Bangkok Bank e.g.

The default limits are far higher (50?) and can be changed on request.

Bangkok Bank:

Set your daily spending limit at a level with which you are comfortable – 5,000Bt, 20,000Bt, 50,000Bt, 100,000Bt or 150,000Bt – by calling Bualuang Phone 1333

Also no general 20k daily limit for foreign cards. Had withdrawn up to 98k with a Visa debit card from Germany.

Must be a specific thing.

Nationwide Bank in the UK has a debit card that does not make any charges for foreign withdrawals. I have their credit card also and it is the same - used to have Barclaycard and was horrified at the percentage they added to my purchases. Would definitely recommend you check out Nationwide.

Is this Dabit card you refer to a FlexPluc card? If so it has a standing charge of £10:00/month. I which case it is not Free. The Flexacount Debit card charges 2% of the amount withdrawn plus £1:00. Plus you pay the 200Bht Thai bank charge. I am not aware of any other Nationwide Debit card, perhaps you can enlighten me?

There is a lot of nonsense and poor advice here. Firstly never withdraw cash on a credit card here or at home or it will hit your credit score (and there are still charges). Use it as much as possible for PURCHASES as you will get a good exchange rate (but always elect to be charged in baht not £) but you'll pay 2.5/3% foreign loading. Check out moneysavingexpert.com and click on relevant tab where you will have this all confirmed. The best advice is to open a Thai bank account and transfer money to it,but don't use your bank which will charge you £20/25 when there are specialists like worldfirst currency who don't charge a fee,or hifx who charge £9 unless over £3000. For the future get a credit card like Halifax clarity for purchases only as no foreign loading. There are also cards which you can preload with cash and can draw money from abroad with no charges. In summary ignore a lot of what's posted and go straight to moneysavingexpert.com.
