KOH SAMUI:-- A driver on Koh Samui has been praised after reacting quickly to avoid colliding with two foreign tourists who had crashed their motorbike.

The incident occurred on 11th March at Thaweerat Phakdee Road in Bophut when the foreign driver of a red and white motorbike lost control and fell into the middle of the road.

The incident, which was captured on camera, sees the motorbike suddenly brake and lose balance causing the tourists to fall down, hitting the surface of the road.

Travelling behind the motorbike was a black Isuzu car which is forced to apply the brakes very quickly, missing the foreign tourists by a matter of inches.

As the footage continues, the female tourist then gets up and tries to help her boyfriend to stand but he is unable to until a Good Samaritan comes along and moves the motorbike to the side of the road. The female tourist, supporting her boyfriend, takes him to sit by the side of the road.

This video clip has been widely shared online and generated a lot of positive comments. The happy majority are praising the driver of the Isuzu MU-7 whose acute alertness enabled them to stop just in time and and avoiding what could have been a very serious accident.

Rider could be concussed but to lose control in the manner he did raises that assumption.

Yes.

Drunk as a skunk.

If you watch the video closely, just before he crashes, his head drops to the right like he's passing out, then crashes.

For whatever reason, he could have pulled the front wheel brake a bit too firmly causing wheel lock and then a skid out of control.

Notice the front wheel is skewed to the right just before the fall.

Anyway, a brilliant reaction from the driver of the Isuzu.

  • looked like the motorbike saw the truck coming up behind him and he panicked, automatically hit the front brake and ....I've seen this time and time again....thank goodness for ABS....

Although the driver's reaction was quick, he did not get out of his car to help. Why does it always so long before people help in Thailand? Because he was/is a foreigner?

Hmmm thread one from Churchill gets locked & another vanishes altogether now that 'Thaivisa Reporters' are on the trail with exactly the same footage?

Ha Ha ..I suppose old news is better than no news

Not sure where my vanished thread went ? 1zgarz5.gif

Not very encouraging for those with a story to share if it gets deleted and then appears 2 days later in the news section ... blink.png

Watch the video again.

See the white car? The one that almost causes a second accident?

It's off camera but it sure looks possible that the white car had already pulled out in front of the motorbike in preparation for a turn.

Of course we all know driver training is of such high quality in Samui there's no way somebody would cut off a motorbike in an attempt to make an illegal turn.

Nope, no way.

Wild speculative accusations can go both ways.

A good Luck story at last & I presume a Thai at the wheel of the car,

The bike passenger could so easily have had head smashed or flattened

And i'm thinking that these posts will get deleted too.

Not to worry, it's not the 1st time it's happened and i'm sure it won't be the last.

biker for 50 years can someone explain why putting on the front brake would lock the back wheel. learn something new every day.

Luckily the car driver wasn't tail gating more than he was.

If any Thais are reading this I doubt they know what you are talking about. And if you describe what tail gating means they will say it is for letting people know to get out of their way (it is usually accompanied with flashing the main beams.)

Wow , this most be one of those Thai drivers that don't text or call behind the wheel and have a normal reaction response.

Lets give him a medal.

Drunk or not , front brake did the trick on a maybe sandy road.

The car was to close behind the bike anyhow !

Looks like white car on wrong side of the road was coming out to cross to the right side, motor bike saw it, realised he had a car right behind him (perhaps panicked a bit) and breaked hard on sandy road causing him to loose it.

Not sure if he was over served or suffered a seizure (something medical) but there

was no reason to just go down like that. Maybe the back wheel locked up. No idea,

but glad the car driver was paying attention and reacted quickly. smile.png

I looked at it frame by frame and it took the car 0.8 seconds to travel the distance between the two vehicles. This is much too close for safety, but the driver was extraordinarily fast to be able to react, break and stop within this short time.

So many people immediately jump to alcohol. I suppose it's that they drink every day so they assume everyone else does.

Let's look at the facts. He was driving in a perfectly straight line in the video until a wheel suddenly turned (which caused the crash). Possible causes for this.

1) He hit the front brake too hard.

2) He had a muscle spasm in his hand.

3) He had a momentary seizure.

4) He was an inexperienced cyclist and over-assumed his capabilities

5) He was drink in the middle of the day.

While the first 4 seem more likely, let's examine option 5. The partner with him seemed absolutely sober. No sign of intoxication. Would anyone in their right mind get on the back of a bike while they're sober but the person driving was smashed? This seems unlikely.

Now I admit the way he got up was suspicious but I suppose if I face planted from a bike, KO'd myself and tried to get up it might take a while for my body and mind to catch up with one another and realize what happened. Have you ever seen a fighter KO'd? They don't generally just get up to their feet and walk away. They're woozy, confused, disoriented. All of this seems to line up.

But nope, let's immediately assume he was downing buckets of booze. Some people here have no empathy and even less respect.

And tire right on the white line, and who knows what was on the road on top.

Sadly see this all the time here. At least the van driver was aware and quick reflexed.

I had a fall similar to this in Koh Samui when an oncoming truck forced me to the side of the road. The edges of the roads are often covered by a thin layer of sand and its common for bikes wheels to scoot out from underneath you.

He did not get out of his car to help because he did not have enough time to get away..and so he knew that not hit the motor driver and is typical for many Thai man.

I might well be a state of shock myself.......

If he was some drunk guy on a bike I doubt I would help too.
