PHUKET: -- Phuket taxi drivers are facing tough new regulations and harsher punishments in a renewed effort to prevent them from overcharging and cheating customers.

The new regulations are aimed predominantly at taxi drivers based at Phuket International Airport, where cabbies are frequently accused of refusing to turn on their meters, overcharging and making unwanted diversions, said Jaturong Kaewkasi, chief policy adviser for the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) on Wednesday.

‟First-time offenders will be charged a 1,000-baht fine and face a seven-day suspension. Those caught a second time will be permanently banned,” said Mr Jaturong, the chief policy adviser for the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO).

What is the point of new rules if there is no enforcement?

To receive credit for making an announcement pretending to do something.

The same as always. Remember, buses banned from Patong hill, jetskis, taxi fare reductions, tourist safely patrol increases, tourist courts, condo scams, bungy deaths, flood mitigation, tsunami drills, functioning cctv cameras, prosecution of illegal land titles, the list could go on.

Is it another 500 Baht and 30 day suspension scheme period for a few months until things are forgotten????? cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

No, you should read the article. It's a 1000 Baht and 7 days suspension scheme that will be soon forgotten.

'‟First-time offenders will be charged a 1,000-baht fine and face a seven-day suspension. Those caught a second time will be permanently banned ..."' Well, if they really follow through on that, it'll solve things very quickly. So why do I have my doubts that anything will change?

To be fair to the DoT - which does take some doing - innumerable passengers, especially Thais, simply don't bother to report the drivers.

"We have set rules in the past without being able to eliminate the problem entirely” (quote from the article in the Gazette)

Duh. Make all the rules you WANT! NOTHING happens without serious and continued enforcement. And we KNOW that's not going to happen. So, once again, just a little something for public consumption, mainly by naïve and gullible foreigners.
