Lifetime ban to be considered on Mercedes Benz driver in Ayutthaya fatal crash

BANGKOK: -- Transport authorities are considering to impose lifetime driving ban on the driver of the Mercedes-Benz which hit another vehicle killing two persons.

The lifetime ban was raised after a team of transport authorities from Ayutthaya province, the scene of the fatal car crash, met police investigating the crash yesterday.

Transport authorities were concerned about the behaviour and conduct of the driver, Jenpob Wiraporn, while at wheel of the vehicle.

If evidence indicates that he was a reckless and dangerous driver, then they will consider permanently revoking his driver’s license.

In another development of the controversy over the incident, experts from Mercedes Benz who have been asked to inspect the vehicle and help find out the speed of the car upon collision with the Ford car, have stated that they will have to postpone and gave no specific alternate date.

Pol Lt Col Nithi Banthuwong, the deputy commander of the Zone 1 Institute of Training and Research of Scientific Crime Detection, yesterday attended a meeting with investigators to monitor developments in the case.

The incident occurred on March 13 and resulted in the death of two persons who were in the vehicle that was hit at high speed by the driver of the Mercedes Benz automobile.

He said police investigators focused on the trajectory of the vehicle and other physical evidence such as skid marks and braking points as well as the actual point of impact.

What they found was pretty conclusive showing long skid marks several meters long indicating that the vehicle was travelling at very high speed.

As such they were able to confirm that the driver Jenpob was driving recklessly.

But he said what remained to be determined is the actual speed in which the Mercedes Benz was travelling at the time of impact which needs to be confirmed by specialists from Mercedes Benz.

Meanwhile Pol Lt Col Nathapol Samsaen, the deputy commander of the First Forensic Science Division revealed that representatives from Mercedes Benz Thailand had asked to postpone their inspection to an unspecified date.

This was because they were waiting for the arrival of certified specialist from abroad to help in the inspection.

They go on to say that inspection into the vehicle’s ECU (electronic control unit) has yet to be done but a preliminary inspection should be completed by the end of the week.

Eyewitness testimony is still being collected particularly from the staff of the Rama 4 toll gate where Jenpob had crashed the barrier prior to the crash and closed-circuit TV footage along the route that the Mercedes Benz’s took leading to the crash are also being looked at.

Jenpob is still receiving medical attention at the Samittivej General Hospital in Bangkok.

Physicians plans to operate on his knee-cap that was injured in the crash next week.

Upon completion of the operation and when he is able to walk again his family stated that he will be making reparations and compensation to the family of the deceased victims, and will also enter monkhood as a merit making.

I got 10 baht says he manages to get better & walk again...all the way to Singapore or at least Swampy.

Driving ban???? Ya think? Vehicular manslaughter & deserves at least 30 years.

A ban on him breathing again would be more fitting.

ALSO, any retard with a tape measure (measure distance at the scene), and a stopwatch should be able to tell he was going nigh on 250 KPH or better.

AND ANOTHER thing... I got 20 baht says the ECU was damaged beyond all repair and/or will get changed out with another one, and the case will drag on for 15 years or more.

" his family stated that he will be making reparations and compensation to the family of the deceased victims, and will also enter monkhood as a merit making."

What a load of crap! No charges for manslaughter, etc, just a confiscation of his driving licence, and a week living in a local temple.

Then in a few months time he can legally change his name and get another driving licence.

The standard sickening result in Thailand. He should be jailed for

a very long time for vehicular manslaughter. If he did

this in the states, he would be in a world of hurt....

A ban ?? For a country obsessed with face, I wonder if

the government has any idea how stupid this makes them

look on the world stage...

We can all hear the bells at the Wat and smell the story is going to fade out into sweet nothings.....

This is a farce, the guy should be behind bars already. but TIT

" experts from Mercedes Benz who have been asked to inspect the vehicle and help find out the speed of the car upon collision with the Ford car, have stated that they will have to postpone and gave no specific alternate date."

Because Mercedes Benz are worried if they "snitch" on their customer, they would loose out on millions of baht , The new Mercedes Benz models have a black box just like planes. give info about speed on impact, if any brakes used etc etc....

but that no-one want to talk about.... truth smacking you in the face.... very bad for face, loose face..... better to make merit, and pay some money, say sorry and all go away....

after all TIT

Vomit.

I'm sure the grief of the families of the deceased will be massively reduced by hearing he will enter the monkhood.

Even bigger vomit.

I hope compensation is decided through proper legal and court processes not just his family deciding (with no respect for proper process) what pittance to throw at the lower classes.

If ever there was an opportunity (unfortunate opportunity) for the justice / judicial system to show / display total lack of bias then it's right now.

'he will be making reparations and compensation to the family of the deceased victims, and will also enter monkhood as a merit making.' That's the 'get of jail free' card.

He can do all of that when he's done a few years jail time for manslaughter.

His father owns a luxury car import company - and why are the 'experts' from Mercedes reluctant? They don't need any 'experts' from Mercedes, what they need a physicist. Any good physicist can determine the speed of the car simply by timing the distance traveled between highway markers that anyone can go and measure the distance between the markers. Any good physicist can do that. Unfortunately Mercedes doesn't employ physicists in Thailand and would be surprised if they did. Maybe better experts in the crime forensics division.....

All the reasons why this will NOT happen are already in the script:-

1. '' If evidence indicates that he was a dangerous and reckless driver they will CONSIDER permanently revoking his driving license ''. Well; the evidence is right there in front of them backed up by a movie of the incident, so what more evidence do they need ?

2. '' Meanwhile; representatives of Mercedes Benz Thailand had asked to postpone their inspection to an unspecified date '' They cited the excuse that they had to wait for a foreign expert to arrive, so does this mean MB have not one Certified Engineer in Thailand capable of properly reading an ECU ? Seems very unlikely to me that Mercedes would allow this to be the case. Besides; the speed of the vehicle can even be calculated from the movie taken of the incident with very close results.

3. ' Eyewitness testimony is still being collected'' This is the stock excuse for delaying any serious investigation in Thailand.

When, and if, this case ever reaches trial, there will be a dozen excuses put forward why this man cannot be held responsible for what he did and whatever 'punishment' he receives will be watered down by excuse's such as 'His testimony has been helpful to the authorities'.... he has 'entered the Monkhood to cleanse himself of wrongdoing'.....'he has made reparations and compensation to the families' etc etc.

In any 'civilized society' where Human lives matter the man would be sent down for a minimum 10 years realistically, and be out for good behaviour after around 7 years but Thailand being what it is, i doubt he will spend a single night behind bars.

How would you use the tape measure and stop watch to work out the speed.

from experience its a bit more complicated than you have posted or think it is.

I am pretty sure a few years of pretending to be too sick will solve the problem and avoid a court appearance. After all, this is how cases involving the Amart kids are expected to end up. Really sorry for those two hapless University Students. I wonder if inviting those Hong Kong experts are going to discover a case of sudden unintended acceleration of the vehicle. Perhaps it was caused by a very heavy right foot on the gas pedal?

No reason to worry about their standing in the world when it's already a foregone conclusion that Thais are superior to all other races. ;-)

Moreover, given the complete lack of intellectual curiosity which is par for the course here, I doubt most of these geniuses are even aware that something like a world stage exists.

To quote you, "What a load of crap!" indeed.

Investigations are ongoing and charges have been made re the deaths. Nowhere has it been said that only merit-making and the loss of his licence is the punishment.

Do you realise how stupid you look when you make comments without taking in what reports actually say?

He has been charged for the deaths, a court will decide the outcome just as it does in US.

Transport Authorities are considering revoking his licence, they have nothing to do with the bringing of criminal charges.
