PHUKET: -- Karon Police admitted today that slow loris touts on the beach are not a high enough priority to merit the resources necessary to put them behind bars.

“Tourists' safety and the safety of their belongings is a bigger concern for us,” said Lt Col Pornnarong Karnonchai of the Karon Police. “We do our best to take care of smaller issues, such as touts on the beach. However, we are suffering from a lack of manpower.”

Col Pornnarong explained that officers were forced to prioritize cases throughout the day, tackling the biggest cases first.

Good gravy, you can't make this stuff up. HELLO Col. Pornarrong. Send one guy down there for 5 freakin minutes and solve a problem. My kids (ages 8 and 9) can make up better crap than that. How freaking dumb are you? Oh, so sorry about the back hand baht you .........

What he really meant to say, but couldn't, is that the slow loris touts send brown envelopes too.

That's how it works here folks.
Jet skis, tuk tuks, slow loris touts, they are low on the priority list for a reason.

Business as usual.
Just be happy there's a cop there when you hit some yaba'd up maniac on his scooter weaving through traffic.

No surprise, police and really all organisations have their priorities. Same as the police back home is not interested in petty theft.

"We do want to get rid of them but , but we can't just go running out of the office every time we get a report. The best way to deal with this is to cut off the demand.Tourists must be educated about the harm being done by these touts and the fact that they are illegally in possession of the protected animal," he said."

I wonder if tourists who are educated about these things stopped coming to places like Thailand where the authorities can't be bothered if it would make a difference - my bet says it would! If there was a petition to boycott Thailand they'd be on it like a shot!!

Many people are educated about these things and want something done - why don't they get it blink.png

There are only a handful of them. It would take a few hours and the problem would be done with. But I speak too hastily. To the Thais it is not a problem. Some Thais make money doing this so it will stay

I think the police aren't interested in petty theft because it's sometimes hard to track down the culprit. Here, it's in plain sight. Easy to solve. But as mentioned above, something dodgy seems to be going on.

Sick!

Because animals are there to be eaten, or exploited.

absolutely.

endangered species have to be protected so they don't go extinct and can be eaten and exploited also in the future.

yes I agree they are to busy to do their work busy sitting in a air conditioned store or office drinking coffee and eating donuts, people it is hot outside now.

What would they do with the animals if they were taken by the police? (And please, sensible answers only.)

I think they go to some animal sanctuary, north of Phuket, on the mainland.

Thailand needs a animal welfare organisation with teeth...

In many countries they have organisations normally charitable that have legal powers to remove and prosecute.

reading between the lines....the slow loris scam must generate some serious tea money.

Interesting post .... makes me wonder what percentage of 'income' is split with the BiB ?
