Thirayuth says military junta fails in reforms after two years in power



BANGKOK: -- The military junta has not achieved its goal to reform the country although two years has passed, indicating it intends to leave the task to new elected government.

This was what Mr Thirayuth Boonmee, a former student activist and now a lecturer at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology said yesterday at a seminar on law, poverty gap and development organised by Thammasat University.

The event was held to mark the birthday of Sanya Dharmasakti, the late chancellor of the university, and former prime minister.

Thirayuth said the past two years after the National Council for Peace and Order came in power, it did not make achievement in its goal to reform the country as it had declared.

He said the military junta was not determined to push through the reform task, but would rather pass it on to the new elected government.

But he said although it did not achieve in the reform, it was still not too late to do it.

He agreed when the military junta head said it needed 10-20 years to accomplish all proposed reforms.

He urged the military to do the reform during the remaining time, saying it has power in hand.

Passing the task to new government would not work as it is not strong enough to do so unlike the military junta which has sweeping power, he said.

Regarding a five-year transition period to be overseen by an appointed Senate, Mr Thirayuth viewed the prime minister must have a good explanation for the public as to why he needs to prolong the NCPO’s hold on power.

He said if the prime minister was determined for change, he should do right now, not five years from now.

No elected Government could even attempt reform even if they wanted to. They would be thrown out quick smart if they did try.

I find the OP highly farcical. A guy who campaigned for "reform before election" without any idea of reform,is now criticising the Junta (that took power in the name of reform without any idea of it either) for not implementing reform.

The situation is worse of course. Duh. You have the masses voting against the elites interests and then the elites seized power. The people of Thailand are not going to be disenfranchised no matter how much the Internet is restricted or how many members of the intelligentsia are silenced. This story does not end well and may lead to a seismic shift away from the quasi-feudal system that is in place.
