Suvarnabhumi revamps control to handle growing number of flights

BANGKOK, 13 April 2016 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi International Airport has prepared to accommodate an expected throng of travelers during this Songkran holiday.

Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd. has indicated that a total 23,924 flights will take place between this 8-18 April, up 10 percent from last year. Suvarnabhumi Airport has had to add up to 50 flights, bringing its daily total to 940 flights, to keep up with demand. Over 100 chartered flights have been booked for the Songkran holiday.

The added flights have had to be met with changes to air traffic control standards with a focus on reducing delays. More airport staff have been added and communications have been upgraded.

Thailand is set to see 1 million flights for the first time this year after recording 800,000 flights last year. New regulations are expected to allow the handling of 1.5 million flights a year.

According to Bangkok Airport Online*, Suvarnabhumi International has a capacity of handling 76 flight operations per hour. Assuming 24-hour operation for 365 days a year, that equates to less than 700,000 flights per year.

But Thailand is set to see 1 million flights for the first time this year after recording 800,000 flights last year.

Without the third runway is a horrific accident waiting to happen?

Unfortunately I had to drop a friend at the airport yesterday. All car parks full (1,2,3) managed to get in the last row of the area next to the Novotel. The terminal itself was abosolute chaos, delayed check ins, delayed flights and a lot of very P'd off people.

Due to the delay in take off, my friend missed a connection in Shanghai (I dont expect the airline to hold a flight over 2 hours for 6 connecting passengers). So a further 12 wait to connect to a Vancouver flight.

The joys of modern travel!

It's all of Thailand. Not a million flights in and out of Swampy...

I am guessing, but to increase the number of flights with the existing 2 runways they will need to reduce separation between outgoing aircraft in the que and outgoing and incoming aircraft. Not a good plan!

How many flights and passengers arrive at Don Muang? Does this not alleviate the congestion at Swampy.
