A motorist rescued from a burning car by passers-by

KORAT: -- A motorist narrowly escaped death after he was rescued from his own burning car by passers-by on Huey Thalaeng-Buriram road in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Huey Thalaeng district early Wednesday morning.

The driver who was later identified as Mr Prayat Boon-art, 49, a resident of Tambon Salaengpan, Buriram’s Lamplaimat district. He suffered multiple burns and was rushed to Huey Thalaeng district hospital for emergency treatment.

Mr Prayat said he was driving alone in his Toyota Vios on his way to his home in Buriram for Songkran celebration from Nakhon Ratchasima. He admitted that he felt tired and might have fallen asleep momentarily causing his car to lose control and crash into a roadside tree.

The car burned and he was trapped inside. Fortunately however, some passers-by saw the incident and rushed to his rescue by dragging him out of the burning car.

A rescue unit later arrived at the scene of the accident and managed to put off the fire but unable to save the car which was heavily damaged.

Lucky man.

I know Thais are well-known for being able to drop off to sleep anywhere, anytime. But far too many do it when they're driving. Had one crash right outside my house and he made such a mess of the shrubbery etc after flying through the upper branches of a tree he must have slammed his foot down on the accelerator as he fell asleep. Only 10kms from home, he said he was tired but just wanted to get home. Nearly left a pregnant wife behind. Stupid. Not only did he totally wreck his car, he had let its insurance lapse the previous day.

Lucky man.

..bloody trees..in the wrong place again!

Don't drive drowsy.
