Phuket Songkran road deaths reaches three

PHUKET: The death toll for Phuket’s Songkran Seven Days of Danger reached three today (Apr 16) when a man died after losing control of his motorbike and crashing into a roadside pylon in Cherng Talay.

Lt Col Rasada Kleungwong of the Cherng Talay Police was called to an incident at 6:45am this morning where a motorbike had crashed into a pylon on Soi Layan 1 on the Koktanod-Layan road. At the time of the incident it was reported two men had been seriously injured.

Police arrived at the scene with rescue workers to find a wrecked Honda Dream smashed into a roadside.

One man, named as 34-year-old Boontan Sonthong has suffered severe injuries, while his passenger, 40-year-old Mr Wuthiya Teintendee had suffered a back injury. Both men were taken to Thalang Hospital where Mr Boontan died shortly after arrival.

It is included in the official songkran death figures, number 2 of the 3 mentioned here. So your post really does not seem to make much sense.

It is included in the official songkran death figures, number 2 of the 3 mentioned here. So your post really does not seem to make much sense.

The Russian was driving up the wrong side of the road.

Thailand certainly is a more dangerous place because of the farang here. Last week it was a drunk American who ploughed into an innocent Thai in Chiangmai.

All in all, a pretty good result for Phuket, considering all the grog that gets drunk there, the amount of motorbikes ( often farangs with no license and no experience), the dangerous hilly roads and the fact that it is tHai new year.

I drove from Korat to Chonburi today, I left at 9am, expecting a seven hour hell ride, especially over the mountains, but had a dream run and made it safely in four hours. Most people were driving sensibly and the police had done some good work with some clever placements of cones allowing for most of the traffic returning to Bangkok. It was the same on the way up on Tuesday (but opposite allowing for the opposite flow).

Credit where credit due. Well done.

I was told by another poster that that is the most dangerous road in Thailand. Heaps of roadworks going on up there to make it safer. It certainly will save lives.

PHUKET -- The news comes as Thailand experienced its worst road-fatality rate during a “Seven Days” campaign for Songkran in national history.

“The three deaths in Phuket are very sad news,” Gov Chamroen said.

“We did the best we could, but many of the accidents were not related to regular traffic. The main causes of accidents, and the resulting deaths and injuries, were drunk driving, motorcyclists not wearing helmets, and reckless driving to the point that there were single-vehicle accidents.

“We are looking deeper into this and hopefully we can reduce the number of people killed on Phuket’s roads to zero,” Gov Chamroen said.

Rorri, you clearly did not read the news story in which Phuket police declared the 3 deaths, nor did you read the governors comments.

Officially 3 people have died, and the media have reported about those official numbers.
