Merkel visits Syrian refugees in Turkey amid tension over EU migrant deal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Turkey on Saturday to see how Syrian refugees are being treated and to try to soothe tensions over the EU-Turkish migrant deal.

Arriving at Gaziantep near the Syrian border, she was met by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Amid a ramped up security presence, Merkel, EU Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans visited a local refugee camp.

A banner proclaiming Turkey as ‘the world’s largest refugee-hosting country’ was on display. Turkey is keen to demonstrate its credentials after rights groups claimed it was not a safe country for those seeking sanctuary.

All looked well in the camp in the town of Nizip.

But with places available in camps limited, most of those fleeing Syria are living in Turkey’s towns and cities,
many begging or working illegally.

Under the deal, Turkey has agreed to take back migrants crossing the Aegean Sea in return for financial aid, progress in EU membership talks and quicker visa-free travel to Europe.

The latter is proving particularly difficult and Ankara has threatened to walk away unless Europe keeps its side of the bargain.

This woman and her mouth have caused major problems for Europe and can't be trusted as she will do and say anything it takes to save herself.

Just think it's been suggested she should throw her hat in the ring for the UN job.

That;s right give her the world to play with !

There was an indepth report on Al-Jazeera yesterday that went into great detail that if Turkey did not get visa free to Europe by June then the whole deal was off.

You tangoed with the wrong devil Merkel. You will pay the price.

That would be perfectly timed, around the same time as the referendum! Also, the Euro-crisis is about to re-appear with regard to Greece & Italy etc. According to a leaked email, the IMF don't want to continue the current arrangement vis-a-vis bailouts, for some of the PIGS countries without changes!

Mr Obama has just stated that the US would not view Brexit as favourable, how many people know what the implications of the TTIP, a US-EU trade deal could be for the UK? It could well give US healthcare compnies much bigger access to the NHS. I was talking to an American guy a few days ago who's friends' medical bills had totalled over US$300,000crying.gif

As I said, perfect timing!!thumbsup.gif

Why did Merkel visit refugees in Syria? I thought there were enough for her to visit in Germany. Maybe she wants to personally invite a few more.

She visited Syrian refugees in Turkey - not Syria.

These Syrian refugees, along with all those other nationality illegal economic migrants are being used by Turkey as a negotiating porn,

Give is billions in aid, speed up our EU membership and allow are citizens visa free travel in Schengen. So millions of Turks will then enjoy free movement and work to right and benefits privileges in the EU.

If you don't, we will not respect international law and allow our citizens to continue illegally trafficking people into your EU countries.

Nice one Merkel. You created the mess which Ergogan now seeks to exploit to it's fullest advantages.

Millions of low cost, Muslim Turkish workers and their families free to settle anywhere in Europe, whilst Turkey is becoming a Muslim dictatorship which doesn't allow free speech, and allegedly finances and supplies terrorist groups - what could go wrong?

Millions of low cost, Muslim Turkish workers and their families free to settle anywhere in Europe,

The current offer, subject to Turkey meeting a number of conditions - refer below - is for visit only i.e. Turkish citizens to travel for short stays (i.e. of 90 days within any 180-day period). Over stayers would be treated as illegal migrants, not permitted legal access to work, no family rights etc etc. Asylum Seeker applications would be declined as happens with the vast majority of claimants from Balkan and most African countries, as Turkey is deemed to be a 'safe' country by Germany.

The statement that "millions of low cost, muslim turkish workers and their families would be free to settle anywhere in Europe"is, of course, completely false.

Turkish people may be allowed to travel to Europe without a visa in much the same sense as we are allowed to travel without a visa to the United States: for a limited period of time, and are definitely not allowed to work. On top of that I seriously doubt if they would be any cheaper that say, Bulgarians or Romanians - who already work for a mere pittance in Northern Europe - quite legally I might add.

As far as the statement concerning Turkey becoming a muslim dictatorship I could not agree more. Last night a Dutch (!!) journalist was taken from her holiday home in Turkey and imprisoned because she had the gall to twitter something the islamofascist Erdogan did not like.

How I long for another person of the stature of the legendary Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who stated:

"Islam, the absurd theology of an immoral Bedouin, is a rotting corpse which poisons our lives"

Thought you're not interested in my posts, so why bother to read & respond.

It's a fact foreign nationals illegally overstay e.g. in Oz in 2013 roughly 62k were illegally living in Oz, of that number 3780 from the UK, 5,220 from the US and the largest group, 7690, were Chinese.

There are roughly 3 million people of Turkish origin living in Germany, so must be plenty of family visits from those living in Turkey - how many visiting overstay and live illegally in Germany?

Yes, but once they get their foot in the door the 'uman rights brigade will have 'em claiming asylum on the grounds of persecution.

I think I saw a figure of around 30%, for the amount of illegal immigrants in the UK who first entered perfectly legally on student visas.

Don't get me wrong, I have worked with a few Turkish guys, and they were great guys in every way, the UK is buckling under the strain, without inviting in more poor people.

There are currently 1-2 million illegal immigrants in Germany, in a few years they'll probably have German passports and be free to travel anywhere.

Visa-free travel will be the thin end of another wedge. Junior doctors are protesting in the UK about lower/worse pay & conditions. They're now finding out how wonderful it is when millions from the third world immigrate and drive down pay & conditions. Mind you, at least they'll be able to converse with the health-tourists in their native tongue.
