THAI to commence in-flight OTOP sales in May

BANGKOK, 25 April 2016 (NNT) – OTOP goods will be featured in in-flight sales aboard THAI airline flights starting from May.


Ministry of Interior spokesman Chayapol Thitisak said progress in the introducing of OTOP merchandise as part of the in-fight sales in cooperation with Thai Airways International was considered an attempt to upgrade the OTOP brands to the global market.

He said the Department of Community Development and THAI have already selected and taken pictures of 128 eligible OTOP goods in 21 categories considered as premium merchandise, including accessories made from silver and handicraft items.

Customers can order these items in-flight via catalog and can choose to receive the items in-flight if they are available aboard or receive at the airport for Bangkok-bound flights or have items delivered to their homes.

The in-flight OTOP sales are set to commence in early May 2016 aboard THAI airliners and online channels, while the products will be available in-flight starting from July with new OTOP stores scheduled to open at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi international airport in July 2016.

Pity I won't be able to enjoy those lovely product on my frequent trips to Melbourne, as I fly Jetstar,

that it's up to 15,000 baht cheaper than TG, and this includes food, seat selected, 30 kg luggage,

and no penalty change of itinerary option and flying a new 787 Dreamliner, and not some aging 777.....

I assume, dont know for sure, Jetstars fees for Tullamarine are a lot cheaper than every other australian airport

Anything direct out of Sydney, its usually always cheaper to fly to Melbourne first, then overseas to wherever

Thai airways, the return flight back is usually only half full, thats what you are really paying for

Does this mean a procession of sixteen trolleys moving up the aisle, all selling exactly the same thing?

IMHO sales of OTOP items per flight will probably be quite minimal.

Even if it was say 5,000Baht sales per flight, most of the revenue must go back to the OTOP manufacturing village, plus there will be various administration, accounting and delivery costs, etc.

Therefore the ultimate final profit to Thai would be say 5 - 8% if they'e lucky = approx. 250 - 280Baht per flight.

When will Thai learn to focus totally on getting core business right.

Reminds me of PM chavalit just after the 1997 crash, his best idea to get the economy booming again was to open thousands of Thai restaurants all over the world and send the profits back to Thailand.

In reality controlling the business activities of thousands of restaurants in many different countries would be a nightmare and extremely costly.

Controlling leakage of revenue and spending would be a nightmare.

Ultimate clear profit, even of thousands of restaurants would be very very minimal against national budget numbers.

His idea would provide not that many jobs for Thais in the other countries.

It would provide a very small number of jobs for Thais inside Thailand.

Says it all.

I'm a bit confused about what the OP is actually saying.

I watched the PM's TV show last Friday, and I'm sure he said there were already 50 OTOP products being sold on Thai airlines. If they're not already being sold on the 'flagship' carrier, then where are they being sold?

Nice critical analysis, I like it!

I think they made the announcement only to get some free positive PR. People read the name of the airline in the newspapers again which is free advertisement and some Thais might even think that the airline is now supporting poor people in Thailand and should therefore be chosen over other airlines who only want to "make profits".

In reality the sales will, as you said, amount to about nothing.

Look around on any flight how many people actually buy something; in most cases it is 1-2 persons only who buy a neck pillow out of necessity or some parents who buy a plastic airplane so their kid will keep quiet. Buying stuff on an airplane so 1980's and the sales would barely cover the extra fuel to fly that junk around with the plane.
