Speedboats crash in Koh Lan in second serious accident in two days

CHONBURI:-- A second speedboat accident at Ta Waen beach in two days left a further eight Chinese tourists hospitalised.

The latest accident on Koh Lan followed Monday's death of a Chinese tourist on a jetski and the serious injury of a Thai man on the back.

Tuesday saw two speedboats taking tourists to and from the holiday island as NPE (Popeye) collided at sea with Blue Dragon 8. Initial reports said there were high waves. The NPE boat had 16 tourists aboard.

One female tourist suffered a broken left leg. Four ambulances met the injured at the pier on the Pattaya mainland as the eight injured were taken to Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Police are collecting witness statements as an investigation is mounted.

What happened to all the so called 'regulation' of the Pattaya marine industry after the ferry boat sinkings? Like the jet ski scams there is no effective regulation or control of the 'cowboy' operators. Until they actually put the cowboy 'influential' people in jail nothing will change!

I've been diving around ko larn and between the jetski hitting signals used by divers in the water to speedboats coming in full blast, it's only a wonder this is not daily news. I don't think any dive boats venture there now. Too dangerous even after suggesting traffic and swim lanes in the area... nope better to just put their head in the sand and go for broke. How many chinese had to be pushed out of the way to get the ambulance to the pier? That's like herding deaf cats

I agree with what you say, but having read many of your recent posts on this and other threads, I have only one question to ask. Do you work for TAT?

Thats why you'll never find me on a speed boat here, or jetski, or a bike for that matter.

Knowing how to enforce laws, or simply the political will to enforce rules and regulations is a real conundrum for the authorities here.

I thought some sort of qualification was necessary before taking a power boat onto the water.

I remember snorkeling with a Thai friend near the rocks at the end of Thian Beach a few years ago. Two or three jetskis driven by a bunch of local thugs suddenly turned up and started to deliberately try and scare us. When you're in the water, where movement is slow, and these wretched things head straight towards you at full speed before making a sharp turn when only a few meters away, it's terrifying and what you really want is to kill the b*stards.

It wasn't the first time I saw them having fun scaring away the tourists either. Of course, I also witnessed the scam about alleged damaged done to the jetski. Many times. This lot and their bosses should all be in jail, is where they should be.

The guys who drive the speedboats are no better. When they arrive or leave with tourists, they do it at full speed. The noise, the pollution and the danger are outrageous. Same goes for the long tail boats that ferry passengers between the beach and the bigger ships anchored about 550m away. I don't go to that beach (or to Koh Larn, for that matter) any more, even though it's a beautiful place and most of Koh Larn's beaches are just as gorgeous as in Samet or the South. The jetskis/speedboats are one of the main reasons I finally gave up.

I can't believe the local 'authorities' still allow such gangsters to operate. Wait, I can believe it, because I know how things work here, and it doesn't take a genius to figure it out, especially when you see a local policeman suddenly turning up and lending full support to the scam. Yurk !

Unfortunately, Thailand is going nowhere fast. If they don't resolve the fishing and slave labor soon, this country is a sinking boat.

Hopefully once the current city hall lot get kicked out in July and the military take over the running of Pattaya all of these jet ski scammers and speed boat drivers will be sorted out.

This is about Thailand. The Philippines is in the world news. What you say is like saying a farang was murdered in Australia so don't comment on a farang being murdered in Thailand.

They already have the hat trick as there was another speed boat accident with fatalities concerning Chinese, just a few months ago. But that seems to have been covered up as i have not seen any more about it.
