Eight food shops on a Phuket beach dismantled by officials



PHUKET: -- About 200 police, military personnel and local officials descended on Lepung-Layan beach in Phuket on Wednesday to dismantle eight food stalls encroached on the beach.

The forced eviction of the eight food shops was led by Phuket deputy governor Chokedee Amornwat and Pol Col Samarn Chainarong, deputy commander of the provincial police. It was part of the cleanup campaign to reclaim the encroached beach and to turn it into public beach as mandated by the National Council for Peace and Order.

The cleanup campaign to reclaim beaches in Phuket from encroachers, mostly food vendors and food shops started in 2014 following the military takeover. On April 20, about 30 food shops and stalls on the Surin beach were dismantled.

The officials first moved toward Tony Seafood shop which is the biggest of the eight food shops targeted to be torn down. But its owner, Mr Nokpol Somrak claimed that he didn’t encroach on public beach and showed documents to the officials to support his claim. He also said that his case is pending with the Administrative Court.

But the officials argued that the court didn’t accept Mr Nokpol’s petition for the suspension of eviction order and protection of his food shop against eviction. After about an hour of negotiation, the shopowner gave in and the officials started the dismantling with the help of a bulldozer.

Seven other food shops on the beach were also torn down by the officials leaving two which have sought help from the Administrative Court. A court’s ruling is expected within 30 days.

Mr Ma-an Samran, the chairman of Choeng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation, after the eviction of all the food shops, the beach would be rehabilitated, landscaped and then turned into a public beach.

Strange that Mr. Maa Samran is behind the eviction, he was the one "leasing" out the plots on a yearly basis.

^ remember that the Karon Beach Or Bor Tor was to be charged and jailed according to authorities - but nothing has happened.

So maybe this time , they are "working with" the Or Bor tor in order to get some real results...

I think Im correct in saying that some of these restaurants are in their 2nd incarnation , having been pulled down 18 months ago , then resurrected way back from the high tide line.

I dont know why they are being dismantled this time , the only reason can be that its still public land or they hadnt submitted a development application ( yeh right 555 )

Nai Harn beach looked much nicer, last time I looked. Fortunately the haha 'Hollywood Museum' proposal was given the bum's rush. Hopefully, the 'photography museum' on Surin beach will be re thought. No one's going to go there. No. The problem is there is absolutely no one with any idea as to how to provide decent facilities, on any of these 'international destination' beaches without despoiling the environment. The fact is those running the show are ultimately peasants and have no clue. That's not going to change any time soon. Just take a look at would could have been in Rawai. An upgrade/lick of paint to a quaint fishing village but now a clusterfuck of ugly plate glass and disparate 'venues' with even more taxi stands. Way to go Prayuth. Not the only one who needs 'attitude adjustment. Specifically well designed/thought out infrastructure. I'll never go back to the only remaining 'peaceful with benefits' beach on the island.

What about the concrete road that led into Tony Seafood shop? Is that going to be torn up too, or just left behind so the restaurant can be rebuilt in September? Do a proper job of removals not just a skimpy half job?

But hey they cut back the awnings on the shops and bars back in 2014, they were illegally encroaching on the the footpath, well if there was a footpath.

Have the 2 "hold out" bars at Laypang beach now gone? Are there any bars at all at Layan/ Laypang?

would be nice if they built some kind of clean cheap food restaurants that was managed by no one and 100% of the proceed would go into hiring machinery and people for beach cleanups

That way the beaches stay clean and people get something to eat.
