Yesterday I encountered a couple of places that increased their prices. Initially I thought it was just a price rise but now I'm not so sure.

1. Went to the local beer shop and got 4 bottles. Normally 50 baht each, yesterday 52 which now makes them more expensive than 7/11. A carton went from 550 to 560 and that is more than at Makro

2. Had some chicken at Chesters (yeah I know not the best choice) and ordered a 2 piece meal set priced at 100 baht. I am asked for 105 baht even though the menu clearly says 100 baht.

I'm not worried about the few baht but all this seems odd. So what gives? Is this some markup for Labour Day? I have never encountered this before and I have lived here for 8 years.

Which beer brandm bottle size would help to comment.

Chang 620 ml (cold, warm beer by the carton is cheaper). Why I find this price increase odd is that Mom and Pop stores are usually cheaper than 7/11, Tops, Makro etc. Considering there is a 7/11 right next door it makes even less sense. If you buy a pack of three from any of the chain places the price is 155 baht, now the Beer Shop is 156. No big deal for me but as soon as Thais work this out they will buy next door at 7/11. I had to go into the 7/11 and no price increase there. I was in both Tops and Villa later in the day and I noticed they had not increased prices either. I can't see the big chains not raising their prices if the wholesale price increased. A Google search suggests ThaiBev has not increased prices.

The Chester's thing is just weird.

Oh no, why is this not the top news on the New York Times? How are you going to maintain your dissolute drunken lifestyle now that your favourite beer has increased by a whopping 2 baht a bottle? You might even have to give up one whole bottle a month in order to keep your expenses in order.

Maybe you should put your brain into gear before hitting the keyboard to flame me. Try reading all my post since you can't have read it entirely first time around.

I've found that a lot of items in the Central Chidlom Food Court have seen price raises of 5-7% recently. A lot of places that cater to tourists are inching up their prices. I don't know if there's an external reason for this. Does anyone know?

I can relate something even more onerous than the discrepancies you mention, the woman who runs a shop in my condo has increased the price of a bag of ice from 9 baht to 9.50 baht. I now save 50 satang per bag by getting a bike to Mini Big C, that's taught her.

Lol! Yup - sneaky inflation - maybe distributors give the chains (with volume) bigger discounts these days?

Related; just had a hot short (that is the smallest! 8 oz - maybe smaller here?) americano at Starbucks - 85 Baht... That is close to double of what I paid in the US 2 weeks ago... The guy at the counter did mention that they had just increased the prices (again).

Cheers!

It's because it's low season, less customers so higher price.

PS, carrier bag of ice in the mom and pop stores usually 5bht.
