AYUTTHAYA:-- An angry monk took a scythe and slashed a farmer who owed him money to death in front of his temple in Ayutthaya yesterday.

The monk, covered in blood, then stood calmly with the weapon waiting for police to come and arrest him, reports Thairath.

A huge crowd had gathered when police arrived. Ayuthaya police learnt that the dead man was Chatchai Plertplai,40, a farmer in the Sai Noi, Bang Ban area where the unnamed temple is also located.

He had been slashed repeatedly about the head and body and his right hand was hanging off. His motorcycle was on its side by his body.

Monk Prayoon Phromsri attached to the same temple was waiting for officers holding a metre long scythe covered in blood.

Prayoon told police that he had been ordained into the monkhood at another temple some eight years ago and had transferred to this one two years back. He had been owed money by the farmer who he said was a football gambler. He had tried to get the money back on several occasions.

Yesterday the monk said that Chatchai came to the temple on his bike. He was sweeping up in the temple grounds and raised the question of the debt and a slanging match ensued. He admitted that in anger he picked up the scythe from a cart and attacked Chatchai.

Another good Monk, and he will never get his money back now.

maybe the moral of this story is be a Monk, you will have money

to lend, and the job is not too hard, or be a farmer ,work your

arse off in the Sun,and always be in debt.

Obviously to become a Monk doesn't include a five year theology course , it's quite evident from a spat of Monk applicants that just about anybody can just wander in, whether you are religious or not .........................................coffee1.gif

"owed him money to death"? Must be a foreigner who wrote that.

You must be a foreigner sarcastically attempting to ridicule Thais by deliberately posting an incomplete quote.

The actual quote was, as you well know, "An angry monk took a scythe and slashed a farmer who owed him money to death...". Perfectly understandable although a couple of commas would have helped.

You could have made it even more ridiculous by just quoting "money to death" and then criticising that.

"Obviously to become a Monk doesn't include a five year theology course..."

Obviously, but as Buddhusm is atheological, rejecting the idea of God, why would it require a knowledge of theology?

Once upon a time clergy men and men of the cloth use to unite people under the umbrella of same fate

and trust, now days, each to his own, money is king and power corrupt the purist souls, so no wonder

we get to hear very often now of those men of god becoming even worse than lowly criminal....

The monk now needs to ensure the executors of the estate of Chatchai Plertplai dec'd are aware of the fact that he is a creditor and recognise that fact before the estate is distributed to the beneficiaries.

a monk.

a loan shark?

a murderer!

A loan shark? Where did you get that from? I've lent money to people many times, it doesn't make me a loan shark.

It might do if they ''owed you money to death'' and then you then scythed them to death outside a temple....

Apologies up front, I didn't have enough emotional control to stop this little piece of pedantry... :)

Buddhism is not actually a "religion" and you can be buddhist regardless of your religious beliefs. So a five year theology course would be a little off the mark...

Having said that, the guy clearly wasn't following Buddhist tenants and will undoubtedly be de-robed (new word?) when he gets to jail.

It is not a rejection of God they just do not speculate on the existence of one

More likely de-flowered ;)

Some people in the area we are clearly enter 'monkhood' as a working profession. One guy in a temple near us goes out every morning collects all the food and money then his wife comes around about 7.30 and he offloads bags of food and goodies to her. He chain smokes, has a nice smart phone and a lap top. If he flys to bangkok he books cheap seats and is given upgraded seats on board, and everyone he walks past wai's him. Easy life, and definitely not a monk.

True Buddhism is athealogical. Thai Buddhism is not. It is full of things and spirits to pray to.

reportedly the farmer borrowed the money to buy an amulet.

guess he believed in magical powers of the amulet.

then a monk hacking him with a sickle no less.

welcome to the medieval ages

soon to come; merlin and the knights of the round table

It does appear to have some funny extras including some of the temple deity statues. But then Christianity had to "borrow" a bunch of pagan stuff in order to be accepted. Those early Christians were not about to give up their old holidays damnit!!!

Much easier to make the "word of God" fit into the existing holidays... ;)
