KHON KAEN: Residents have reported an elaborate scam involving some twenty million baht allegedly committed by two teachers in Mahasarakham.

The scheme involves seeking large payments for the promise of lucrative work at the head office of the Electrical Generating Authority of Thailand in Bang Kruay, Nonthaburi, reports Thairath.

Complainants who contacted the Damrongtham government help centre in Khon Kaen said that it was a detailed scam involving relatives of the teachers, training at a five star hotel with meals and promises that were never fulfilled going back several years.

Pongpot Bunmeewiset,63, one of 29 complainants seeking help from the government service, said that relatives of the teachers would seek suitable victims and gain their confidence before introducing them to the husband and wife teaching couple who lived in Phayakphompisai dsitrict of Mahasarakham.

People were convinced it was legitimate as they were given meals and assurances in a friendly family atmosphere of help and mutual understanding. A training seminar was organised in Khon Kaen in a five star hotel in which the participants were even measured for EGAT uniforms. People were promised large salaries up to 200,000 baht a month with housing, healthcare, life insurance and other benefits. All they had to do was pay money up front to secure the work.

But promises of employment starting in 2014 were not forthcoming. The husband and wife team said the jobs had fallen through and the money would be returned. Then contact started to get more and more difficult. Mobile phones were not answered. The man left his job as a teacher.

The woman, still at her job told people who went to see her that if they wanted their money back to make a claim. Complainants soon realised others were in the same boat.

Pongpot said he had parted with 750,000 baht in two down payments to secure the employment. He added that nearly all the victims are civil servants some of whom have known the teachers for up to twenty years.

Losses are thought to be in the region of 20 million baht.

So they paid a bribe to get a job...isn't that in itself a crime, regardless of whether the job existed or not?

One would think that paying for a job would mean that you're not qualified to be in that position so should keep a low profile. But so often is the case, I've seen people who are not qualified to tie their own shoes, giving the most inane direction. Scary thing is they actually believe they know what they're doing based on their paid position.

Are you sick of getting scammed?

Tired of living a boring life?

Want to be your own boss?

Make big money and work when you want?

well, send me 100,00 baht and it's time to live the dream you imagined?*

Here's a novel idea - values ones skills and suitability for the job, rather then ones ability to pay for the position. No wonder Thailand is in the state it's in. Unqualified people in important positions, right from the top to the bottom.

I would guess, if no money was paid to any official, and only to the con artists, than a bribe was not paid; rather it was a fee for fraudulent employment assistance.

This. Corruption is endemic. Jobs are bought. Also, degrees, drivers licenses, votes, contracts, public lands...just about anything.

Greed and corruption, trying to buy jobs that they wouldn't be qualified in.just like the education system where the so called teachers who can't teach.ive noticed that the best way to scam a Thai is through greed,it's their Achilles heel.we need to see more of this sort of thing and then maybe they will learn you can't buy a position, you just get scammed.som non nah.

Yeah, I see that, but they thought they were paying for the job, in effect paying a bribe.

The fact no job existed I suppose means they weren't, but their intention was to bribe.

I am confused...do the complainants want the jobs they paid for?

er well yes like all those Policemen, teachers and custom officers who did just that, it's the Thai way

This is true. I run a business with my wife both distribution retail n online as well. Many times we r 1 of the only dealers in thailand with the products. N we sell the products at the price it is meant to be sold. Consumers or other shops who know us for long will buy only from us, but some other buyers will be attracted by other shops who advertised it for a lower price which is impossible. Once they see its lower than original price they will think they got the deal of the century n forget to check credibilty of the seller. Even worse is once they get scammed they dont dare to report becos the scammer will say to give back the money in installments. N for fear of not getting money back n polcie not doing their jobs nothing will be done.

You didn't read the entire article: No prior skills needed.

They were going to be TRAINED for these jobs in a swanky 5-star hotel. <wink, wink>

And hey, if you can't trust a 20-year friend in your small town, who CAN ya trust??

This scam ranks pretty high on the ultimate betrayal list.

One serious flaw in their plan: with 20-million baht, they could have already been drinking Mai-Tais in Rio.

Thais really need to learn the old adage of 'If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.'
