SURAT THANI:-- One of the worst forest fires seen on Koh Samui in years has burnt out some 60 rai of land.

The fire took hold from evening on Tuesday and burnt through the night. The area is between Bo Phut and Mae Nam, reports TNAMcot.

The fire was difficult to fight because access to the hilly area can only be made on tracks for motorcycles. It affect a wide stretch from Phu Khao Ork to Phu Khao Phra.

Many people on the neighbouring island of Koh Pangan and locals shared pictures of the fire on Facebook and the Line application.

It was reported that it may be the worst fire in the area for fifty years.

Samui district chief Paiboon Omark said that it is suspected that the blaze had been caused by locals burning scrub and he called on the police to investigate and prosecute those responsible.

I have removed a couple of remarks, made... Thai bashing & ridiculous suggestion made..

The is no confirmation of how the fire started,'

Hope that no one was injuried or lost his house...

A wald fire is always impressive and better to be seen from very far away.

I remember when I was in Corsica (a few decades ago), the moutain was burning. I ran for my life altough I was 200-300 m far from the fire.

Something I will never forget and never laugh about.

When I see the pics from Fort Mc Murray, I get "chicken skin"...

I have heard it was only 15 rai, of scrub land in the Maenam watershed area.

I would not want to be in Fort McMurray... I know people there, but not heard anything... now that's devastating.

Last time I was in samui I was knee deep in water and I was on the second floor.

I have fires being lit around my house every night in Bangrak.Given how dry it is it would not be a surprise if a few houses were burnt down, hopefully not mine !

I agree with you. I was working there until recently. Fort McMurray is not the prettiest of places but it could have done without the fires
