CityNews – The one way system in the sois between Nimmanhaemin Road and Sirimangkalajarn Road has been cancelled after much complaint from locals.

The one way system that was implemented on December 25, 2015, has now been cancelled following a meeting to discuss the system after an influx of complaints to the Chang Mai Administrative Court claiming the system was confusing tourists and locals and adding to congestion problems.

As a local who live at Nimman, I am glad to see it cancelled.
This kind of "half-solutions" will not work for this area.
Only the real solutions with a lot of money invested will work :

- city should buy a huge piece of land and build multi-level car park, which will charge a fee to refund itself

- parking on sois not allowed anywhere

- no red cars and tuk tuks access allowed to Nimman area (tourist still can catch them from Suthep, Sirimankalajarn and Huay Kaew Road)

Agree with the rest but Nimman itself is wide enough for public transport and it should be available.

But no parking is the key.

They stop in the middle of the road, not respecting any traffic rules.

Agree that no parking on the sois would be helpful to alleviate congestion; but then there does need to be parking areas.

Otherwise people park where they want anyway; just like they drive down the wrong side of the road.

And I find the speeding motorbikes to be as hazardous as the speeding cars; both have little to no regard for pedestrians.

That is an issue of law enforcement and nothing to do with the fact that Nimman should be served by public transport.

One problem I have observed with Nimman is vehicles trying to make right turns from or to the sois across two lines of traffic, impeding traffic flow. Traffic would move much better if left turns into and out of sois are the only turns permissible.

And just as I was getting use to it. Well, on the bright side, all the motorcycles who simply ignored it probably won't notice the difference.

They can put all the signs up that want telling drivers it's illegal to turn right across traffic, but drivers will ignore them because they is no traffic enforcement to speak of in Chiang Mai, no less Thailand.

There should not be parking on those sois! Make businesses build parking, or public parking in public/private partnership. Make people walk more, and build sidewalks. Oh, I forgot that if you kill someone with your car, nothing happens, so they will drive on the sidewalks.

There's a parking lot on soi 9 (on the left just past the complex that houses a few small shops like 'Bake and Bite')- they ask 50 baht regardless of,duration, though, and people will park on the street to avoid it.

Soi 17 has a parking lot opposite the Khun Mor restaurant, 10 baht or free if you get your receipt stamped at the restaurant.

The mango smoothie from heaven can be bought at the restaurant or a smoothie bar nearby.

It's not that difficult. Make the sois one-way so people can park on both sides of the street and allow a lane in the middle for one-way traffic. Or enforce one side of the street parking 24-7 so that enough of the soi is available for traffic to move both ways.

Neither solution will solve the Nimmanhamin traffic problem. Either solution will make it a little better, but either will also require effective enforcement of driving and parking laws. I'm not holding my breath.
