Just saw on the Bangkok Post that the 12 billion baht expansion of Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) has been approved. Can't link or quote it so maybe someone can find another media source to post the info here.

Guess some thinking it will go to Samkampaeng/Lamphun/Lampang or other far out area will be relieved. smile.png

This is an old article from a few years ago in Chiang Mai City Life - http://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/plans-for-chiang-mai-airport-expansion-unveiled/

CityNews – Chiang Mai Airport will be revamped and expanded so it can handle an increasing number of passengers, it was announced this week.

Airports of Thailand held a meeting with the project’s advisory team and representatives of government agencies, state enterprises, the private sector and the local community at the Shangri-La Hotel on Wednesday.

The team noted that Chiang Mai is an important gateway to northern Thailand, and that 80 percent of tourists visiting the country travel by air.

It is forecast that just under 6.8 million passengers will use Chiang Mai Airport this year, and that figure will increase to 13.2 million in 2034.

About 3 weeks ago there was an announcement that either Lampang or Lamphun were going to have an airport upgrade to take international flights. I have no idea how genuine that was or just someone's pipe dream.

It was said that it would relieve pressure on Chiang Mai International. It is truly chaos there when three air buses arrive at much the same time.

Two full plane loads of shouting, yelling Chinese, one plane load from KL. No wonder one of the Immigration staff put on industrial headphones. blink.png

Hope parking facilities are in the plan.....

The present terminal could be expanded & the #2 runway improved at the current location ......

Improvements planned over 15 years!....

That's a hell of a lot of time for future governments, juntas, governments, juntas, ad infinitum to change, this "plan" over and over again. Good chance that some of the planners, and dare I say TV posters, will not be around for the final (poor choice of words I know) result.

Current speed limit for change in Thailand.....glacial

Is there a #2 runway already?

AFAIK there is only one.

I also saw the article. It is going to upgrade the airport to handle 20,000,000 people. The bulk of the work will be done in 10 years with a billion and a half left to complete the upgrade at a latter date.

Nothing said about parking but I don't see how they can ignore it. It should be a priority item. All the paper said was that the first project will be to the runways and the terminal building. No details or time limits other than the ten year with more to come.

Good news, an expanded new Terminal building is long overdue. My understanding is the cargo and services will be re-located ahead of demolition of the old buildings to make way for Terminal extensions including additional parking.

The runway upgrade may include new concrete landing/turning/taxiways to handle heavier traffic.
