BANGKOK: -- A man arrested with nearly 600 grams of ice amphetamine at the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok told police he needed money for a dowry.

Teerayut (or Peun) Rachathorn, 21, a rubber worker from Trang bowed his head in shame throughout the news conference announcing his arrest reported Daily News.

He told Taling Chan police that he was short of money for his wedding and when an agent suggested he could earn 10,000 baht to transport the drugs from Bangkok to Trang he decided to do it. He met someone in a department store in Minburi and was told to take the drugs to a customer in Trang.

But a routine check at the bus station was carried out after police saw him acting suspiciously. Some 590 grams of ice worth an estimated one million baht on the street were found in his backpack.

I expect many Thai men put much more effort into rounding-up dowry money (and will take risks to do so) than they do in paying off debts since raising the dowry money is a matter of face and love/lust.

And it's merely an outdated hustle that Thais just keep perpetuating to show off money in a basket for a photo op. Many Thais have been known to borrow the money for the photo op and ceremony and then pay it back after. It's like the makeup and little side street shop costumes for photos.

No Thai news or police work on busting the agent who set up the deal and his network.Thais are satisfies with making a show of the mule bust.

Prison or marriage. Either way, he was destined to wind up with a ball and chain.

Maybe there is a reason for this.. perhaps the police didn't stop him for acting suspiciously. Maybe they knew in advance he was coming with those drugs. Many drug dealers will sacrifice advance small haul to sidestep the police so a much larger shipment will pass by undetected.

It's quite sad that a mere 10,000 would have changed this fellow's life. Really, Thais need to realize and then act upon the reality that much of their desperation in life has an origin in the corruption and informal caste system that plagues Thailand. Thai responds to numbers...the citizenry needs to hold debates and protests...they need to have a simple memory and keep stories of abuse alive in social media...the army cannot lock up everybody...
