Drought lingers in many northeastern provinces

BURIRAM, 30 May 2016 (NNT) - The provincial irrigation department in Buriram province advises the local farmers to postpone their rice cultivation for one more month due to low levels of water in reservoirs. In Kamphaeng Phet, farmers’ water sources are still dried up, damaging many crops.

Drought has continued to affect Mueang district in Kamphaeng Phet. The local farmers are worried that all of their produce will be damaged if the situation does not improve.

In Buriram, farmers inside and outside of irrigation areas in the province are warned that their rice may be damaged if they plant it during this period. The provincial irrigation department suggests that they should not plant rice until mid-June despite some rainstorms in the province. No water has not yet flown into all 16 reservoirs in Buriram.

In Surin, certificates have been given to the farmers who participated in a training course to increase agricultural production. They learned how to adjust their cultivation to suit the weather and market demands.

Been pissing down in Nong Khai where I am and has been for days, great for the farmers.

The water has not "flown" into Buriram ??? smile.png

Oh it has, it does the same thing every year, has done for decades.

But despite the perpetual repetition of the same event, the geniuses in charge of water management have totally failed to devise a method of storing it for when they really need it.

There is a large reservoir just outside Buriram city, well it's wide and long, and about 2 meters deep at the most....... dig a bigger hole guys, it isn't rocket science.

IF they are down to the bedrock so as to be able to retain water digging it deeper would just drain the water away - maybe blink.png

(Mr) we have had a fair amount of rain in the last 7 days the drought measures (I prusume measures water on for 4 hrs a day) are having little effect on us Luckly we planned ahead and have 6000ltrs in tanks which refill when water is on and another 12000 ltrs in uggs (rain water harvest). Which we share with close neighbours and family no problems. However the biggest problem for villagers without storage isn't the measures used so far in May alone no less than 4 accidents involving pick up and main water pipe, Have left us with no water for a total of 8 days. Luckily it's been stager ed but one the second ocassion it was 4 days solid.

Don't misjudge your local downpour with a region like Isan.

North - South ~ 500 km (300 miles).

We had some significant rain at the beginning of the week.

80 km to the east, north of Khon Kaen city: not a drop.

It's also a usual effect that the east of Isan along the Mekong has heavy rain, while central and south are dry.
