BANGKOK: -- Police in Chatujak quickly arrested a homeless man Sunday for attempting to steal money from an ATM near the weekend market.

Winai Buaputtha, 45, a native of Khon Kaen was found to be sleeping at the Lat Prao intersection under the Viphavadee Rangsit road reported Thairath.

He was found in possession of a CPU (central processing unit) of a Kasikorn ATM that he thought contained money. An iron bar used to prise open the ATM was also taken into evidence.

Winai told officers that around midnight Saturday he had sniffed glue then decided to go and try his luck at getting money from an ATM. He was a worker who cleaned people's filters at their homes but money was tight lately.

Sunday afternoon was taken on a reenactment to the cramped quarters under the intersection that he called home and to the ATM at Chatujak park. Acting police chief Sanit Mahathavorn turned up to accompany him.

Winai told officers he used the iron bar to open the ATM and thought the CPU contained money. He was disappointed back at his lair to find that it didn't.

He was taken to Bang Seu police station and was initially charged with theft in the hours of darkness and damaging property.

The only reason the police chief showed-up was for the media photo-opportunity.

Yes, any excuse for a reenactment so the media can see the BIB in ' action ', well posing anyway.

Perhaps they can send this glue sniffing, homeless man up to Wat Dhammaakaya, where they can dip into the millions of baht on hand, and help this man out of his desperate situation. Isn't that what Buddhism is all about?

"Acting police chief Sanit Mahathavorn'"

He's been acting police chief for weeks.

What happened to the actual police chief, has he been removed, or... any clues?

..." He was charged with theft in the hours of darkness" . Is that more or less serious than theft in the hours of daylight?

Believe it or not, theft in the hours of darkness IS a more serious offence than the same crime committed during daylight hours. In view of this, his sentence will be more severe.

No idea, but it would be nice if they did the reconstruction in the hours of darkness, that copper is one ugly bastard.
