UK is the most corrupt country in the world

Recommended Posts

Why is my internet and cable in Thailand $30 and in the US for the same service $200?

Why is my electric bill here $30 and in the US $200-$300. ( and it rarely goes out here)?

Why is my water bill here $3 and in the US $50?

Why are property taxes for a new house in the US 2% of the purchase price every year, and here it is zero?

Why are monthly maintenance fees for a quality Condo $600 a month in the US and $50 here?

Why is a massage $60 in the US and $6 here?

Why is a special service $200 in the US and $20 here?

Why is a Taxi for 30 minutes in the US $100 and $12 here?

Why is a bottle of water $.30 here and $1.50 in the US?

Why do I pay less then $200 a month for medical insurance here and in the US it is close to $1,000?

Food, gas, haircuts, on and on what else?

It's because if you decided to go to work here to support your family, you'd be making 75-cents to $1 an hour--average prevailing wage. In my USA hometown, it's $15 an hour, and the standard of living for the average worker is in the stratosphere compared to an average worker (read: NOT Bangkok high rise office) here.

It's called a develop-ING country. Like someone else said, it's not rocket surgery.

The "average" wage in Thailand is 13,500 b a month.

The minimum wage in the USA is still $7.25 an hour. Most "average" jobs are not paying $15.

But even at $15 I doubt they are in the stratosphere compared to Thailand. Add Health insurance and a small Apt. and that $15 is gone in most developed cities.

But you can manipulate it any way you want.

Maybe you should get a job with the federal government.

PS: It's Rocket science, not Rocket surgery. But nice try:)

I am from the US but just to follow up about my opinion that the US is #1.

I guess maybe you cannot call it all corruption, but maybe just scamming/ripping people off.

Oh yes, taxes. State, federal, merchandise, food and property are all taxed.

Now throw in the political system, judicial system and financial markets.

The US is a scam place. Always some crisis or excuse to raise the price of something.

Too many people sitting in offices doing nothing and making $75,000 a year.

If not the word "corruption", scam ripoff fits the bill.

In answer to your multiple questions, the answer is labour costs.

Corruption in the USA, UK and Australia exists -it's just better disguised.

If you take that Thai monthly wage and divide it by the average hours an average Thai works in a month, you'll get my figures.

I was only comparing to my own city, where the MINIMUM wage is $15/hr. And yes, the standard of living difference is vastly different.

Lastly, "rocket surgery" is a play on "rocket science" + "brain surgery" for our duller readers with no humor or imagination.

UK is not a Country; it is a collection of four Countries though I accept it is administered at the "national" level as one.

America is not a Country; it is a continental land mass of which the United States of America is one of many countries within it.

No, the UK is not the most corrupt as a fact, only someone's uninformed opinion.

On the list you've chosen to reply to above, Australia figures somewhere below UK - which is at No. 10, equal with Germany & Luxembourg - in the "12 Least Corrupt Countries" list, meaning that, according to that particular survey, Australia is more corrupt than UK.

Other surveys show Oz slightly less corrupt than UK so, on balance, I guess they're pretty equal overall.

On 29 April 1770, Botany Bay was the site of James Cook's first landing of HMS Endeavour on the continent of Australia. Later the British planned Botany Bay as the site for a penal colony. Out of these plans came the first European habitation of Australia at Sydney Cove. Although the penal settlement was almost immediately shifted to Sydney Cove.

So Australians are mainly descended from criminals.

The City of London is an excellent tax-haven, supported by slightly-less-regulated places like Jersey/Guernsey/IoM, and the off-the-wall Caymans/BVI/Gibraltar and so-on, so the OP is correct.

The old British Empire lives on, in financial terms, competing with the modern American one, draining taxable profits out of the third-world, and the Chinese empire-to-come will be using Hong Kong & Macau in a similar way.

I'm currently reading an excellent book about the offshore-world called "Treasure Islands" which, while clearly having an agenda, nevertheless goes into interesting detail about how this has all arisen. thumbsup.gif

It is up to Governments to change the legislation that allows tax havens - so hate to say corporations and individuals can use the law to legally avoid tax.

I am not so naive not to realise there is a lot of illegal tax evasion going on as well.

At one time our dear Labour Government in the UK imposed a 98% tax band.

My father who earned income around the world decided enough was enough and opened up an account in Jersey for this overseas income - thus avoiding this insane level of tax- all perfectly legal. Was he corrupt ? No.

I think that in general you're right, but the OP seemed to be talking about financial corruption only. In that case I thing The City is more corrupt that Wall Street, and most of the Too Big To Jail American financial groups have divisions located in London. It's less regulated, and the laws are less strict. In America we have lots of commercial corruption and police corruption, but I think the Brits take the loving cup for finance shenanigans.

My taxi to the airport is $20. What--are you riding from Poughkeepsie to JFK? Don'be be ridiculous. A Manhattan-JFK taxi ride is WAY below $100. Taxi for 30 minutes $100? the only place I've seen that is in Houston.

When even our PM has a secret offshore bank account you know it's true.

Try to get your facts right before posting. He had invested in an offshore fund run by his father. Not the same thing at all, and not certainly not "secret" or surprising as most investment funds are based offshore in order to avoid double taxation on the same income (once on the fund and then again on the investor).

Do you have a pension fund? Guess what, you're probably an offshore investor. Does that make you corrupt?

We managed quite ok when we ruled over most of the world not to long ago.

Its over, get used to it:

Thank you. I'm American and I took my business model from the US banking system many years ago as a young man. I was able to take a comfortable early retirement by "using" the banks. God bless America and her little brother the UK... wink.png

I thought Israel was America's little brother; the one they protect at all costs, even when little brother goes around bullying and torturing their neighbours. The UK is America's tiny cousin, who gets bullied by their big cousin, used and abused and who, somewhat bizarrely, keeps going back for more terrible treatment in their one sided relationship. No?
