After sexually assaulting a South Korean interpreter assigned to him during an official three-day visit to South Korea, the head of the Ministry of Education’s Professional Development Department was demoted yesterday. Kry Seang Long was in Seoul from May 23-25 for the Asean+3 HRD Forum when he molested his female interpreter, local media reported.

“The ministry’s Discipline Council took an administrative action in accordance with the statutes on civil servants of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the regulations in force by withdrawing him from the post of Professional Development Department at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports,” a ministry statement said. It did not mention whether Mr. Seang Long was fired from the ministry. Education Ministry Spokesman Ros Salin could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Earlier this month, Korean media reported that a 44-year-old Cambodian official had committed sexual assault on May 25 and was arrested on May 26 after a complaint from the victim. Mr. Seang Long aggressively wrapped his arms around the woman’s waist and attempted to kiss her, local media reported. Persecutors in the case saw Mr. Seang Long’s actions as grounds for his permanent ban from the country.
