BANGKOK – A 21-year-old American woman is recovering in a Bangkok Hospital after she was stabbed by a mugger while walking from a taxi to her apartment in Bangkok.

Brook Drost, who teaches English in Bangkok, was headed home after an evening with friends when a stranger jumped off a motorbike in front of her.

“I could tell by the look on his face — a face so serious and intent on causing harm, that he was almost expressionless — something terrible was about to happen” she told the Recorder.

"She said it’s unusual for a foreigner to be attacked in Thailand, so the police have been highly involved in her case" she should pay more attention to the news I guess... and also get an insurance IO of counting on good samaritans!

I hope for a fast recover.

So she had to fund her hospitalization.

Not good.

Why is that your first reaction to the story, and no actually the GoFundMe page was for her mother to fly to Thailand.

I hope she recovers quickly and learns some life skills .,

Like what, Brazilian jujitsu to fend off two men with knives?

Posted

"After the attack, she spent the rest of the day in the trauma ward, with more than 15 police officers and detectives filtering in and out"

I guess the word got out she is cute

" A professional sketch artist visited her in the hospital to draw a composite of the suspect, and she’s hoping it will lead to an arrest."

Unfortunately, it will be blurred when (or if) the press releases it to prevent possible loss of face to the assailant.

She's certainly an optimistic girl, if perhaps a little too naive to the dangers of Thailand. Surely this will give her a bit of a crash course in Bangkok street smarts.

TAT not there yet.

regards Worgeordie

You sure about that? The whole story sounds like it was written by TAT, this bit in particular

''She said it’s unusual for a foreigner to be attacked in Thailand, so the police have been highly involved in her case.

“All of my Thai friends were speechless when they heard the news, because they had never heard of such a terrible act of violence being carried out on a foreigner''

Maybe not this bit though

''she said she will miss about a month of work without pay.''

Where does it say she doesn't have insurance?

Fundraisers are just a convenient way for friends and family to offer support online from their computer, not sure why people freak out about them. It's not begging.

In this case apparently it's to cover the expenses of her mother going to see her.

The initial fundraising goal was only the price of a plane ticket:

Why would friends and family need a site like gofundme that takes a cut and has history of avoiding payouts?

So, it's not just friends and family.

How many of you have actually been attacked yourself and how many just read in the newspaper how dangerous it is ? I know of no foreigners in my direct circle that have been attacked by Thais. I do know of Thais having been attacked by Thais. So I agree that its more rare for a foreigner to be attacked than a Thai. Sure there are news reports but bad news sells good news does not.

Not really unique to Thailand, you'll find such incidents all over the world and the touristy spots are the

worst, having said that, that doesn't negate the fact that something awful happened to this young lady,

something that we all dread to find our loved on in such situations,

get well young lady and go back to resume your life as before and someday, you'll tell your grand kids

all about as an anecdote of your life.....

Well, maybe she has an insurance, even if I still doubt it. Either way you're saying that is not begging while in my humble opinion one should cover his own expense, and be prepared even for the unforeseeable, especially if you have a daughter in the other side of the planet. I repeat "It's my opinion" you have yours and I respect it.

So, it's not just friends and family.

Friends is a loose term, it could be anyone of course.

Having one place to donate with a web link is very convenient, easier to spread around than privately messaging everyone your bank details etc. plus any payment option can be used. Pretty common sense. Being so convenient, self-contained and compatible with Paypal can end up more than making up for whatever cut the site takes.

Not sure about gofundme's reputation but they could've used any other crowdfunding site.

A better question is why do people get so riled up by online fundraisers.

Then you and your circle have led a charmed existence.

A number of my work colleagues have been robbed, threatened and assaulted. Mostly just walking home from work or equally innocuous behaviour.

In nearly every case they were in areas they considered safe, were not drinking or doing anything other than minding their own business.

One, to be fair brought it on himself.

Don't get me wrong, it's the same in any major city anywhere, but don't tell me it doesn't happen.

Where you have poverty and perceived/relative wealth, you will have this type of crime.

The trouble with reputations is they are hard to get and easily to lose, the increase of assaults on foreigners in Thailand is rapidly rising , hence the reputation of a safe holiday destination is wearing thin and unless there is a dramatic turnaround the position will only get worst. it is up to Thailand to manage this problem , how they do this will be interesting......................................coffee1.gif

Probably, but most of my friends are in BKK, maybe they are younger than your friends. I am not saying it does not happen I am saying its not as bad as some people make it out to be.

either she gets her taxi to take her right to her room or hires a body guard, either way she has learned a lesson about LOS

DOH......

"Because of the recovery process, she said she will miss about a month of work without pay." Now we're getting somewhere.

Sounds very much like a newbie. Foreigners don't get attacked.....

take a walk along beach road in Pattaya at about 2am and report back

don't kid yourself attacks like this happen weekly most go unreported for obvious reasons, I am aware of several in the last 4 weeks

This woman is lucky to be alive after taking a knife to the lung.

Nice to read the police are taking this attack very seriously and pulling out the stops to apprehend the man.

I do not know any foreigners that have been assaulted by Thais, but my acquaintances stay out of the bar zones, mostly and don't get into pushing squabbles with drunk locals.

I think this does more to show just how ineffecient the bib are, in their approach to crime, than anything I have seen in quite some time. The only thing they forgot was the group photo where they could display their medals and service ribbons, which are not displayed by undercover /or detectives YET.

I guess street smarts are a life skill. Beautiful girl walking alone at night wearing gold. after drinking in a foreign country. Not a life skill.

Like what ? 30 million visitors and how many women stabbed in a violent robbery? I cant think of more than a handful last year. I guess the lessened learned is she was extremely unlucky considering the odds coffee1.gif
