Why Trump Can't Easily Replicate the Brexit's Success
The Republican candidate is deeply unpopular, and his Democratic rival is promoting her own version of American nationalism.
PETER BEINART

NEW YORK: -- American commentators have spent the weekend pondering the similarities between Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and America’s impending vote on whether to take leave it of its senses by electing Donald Trump. The similarities have been well-rehearsed: The supporters of Brexit—like the supporters of Trump--are older, non-college educated, non-urban, distrustful of elites, xenophobic, and nostalgic.

Moreover, many British commentators discounted polls showing that Brexit might win just as many American commentators, myself very much included, discounted polls showing that Trump might win the Republican nomination. Brexit may even result in the installation this fall of a new British prime minister, Boris Johnson, who is entertaining, self-promoting, vaguely racist, doughy, and orange. It’s all too familiar.

But there are two crucial differences, which should offer Americans hope. The first is that Brexit is an idea whereas Trump is an actual person. For many in Britain, leaving the European Union became a way of expressing their frustration with immigration, erosion of sovereignty, economic stagnation, and unaccountable elites.

Many Americans feel a similar frustration and if given the chance to signal it via referendum—Should America pull out of NAFTA? Should America’s allies shoulder the entire cost of US troop deployments? Should America break up large investment banks?—a majority of Americans might vote yes.

NAFTA created 20 million jobs in the US, removed 18,000 various taxes on US exports and the US manufacturing sector / exports are at an all time high.

People that watch FOX "News" won't know these things.

^^NAFTA created the rust belt.

The Atlantic is a garbage publication. I'm surprised Thai Visa uses left wing hate trash publications in their postings. Imagine the whine if they used a "Western Journalism" or Alex Jones (equally biased as the Atlantic) for articles.

Overall NAFTA is a huge success. US Exports are at an all time high.

Technological improvements, better management practices and poor Auto Workers Union policies drove out the old jobs in the rustbelt. The horse saddle making industry took a hit when Ford invented the assembly line. If we stuck with horse transport, the auto industry would never have developed. Are you getting it now?

NAFTA makes it easier for politicians to blame the problem on foreigners. Foreigners make ideal scapegoats for politicians.

Americans who can vote would do well to start spending more time thinking about economic realities, instead of being swept away by rhetoric they hear on right wing fake news.

There is one economic reality in the USA: 19+ trillion dollars of odious debt. All news on the mainstream media is fake news AKA peddling fiction.

A fractional reserve debt based currency that is only barely holding its value because of its petrodollar status enforced by wars is another reality.

Some people just don't get it. They care about nothing but themselves.

Get some compassion for humanity.

I fear it is already too late because you will never hear a single politician of either party talking about making peace or being fiscally responsible.

Free Trade agreements generally lead to the rich getting richer and the workers becoming unemployed, as to NAFTA not sure whether helped or hindered the US. But looking at the TPP and related deals, they are written by corporate US for corporate US, yet to see any benefits to either the western countries or their working/middle classes. May lead to some 3rd world country jobs as long as robots are more expensive, although this is changing.

Generally if people want cheaper consumer goods then these deals can deliver, at the expense though of local businesses, meaning lower employment and less government tax revenue which may mean higher debt.

As to Trump, he may be marginally safer than Hilary, but would expect as the election approached that he will become more mainstream. In good news for the Israel lobby Trump has backtracked from his neutral position on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and is now “committed” to supporting Israeli settlement expansion on territories it has seized illegally, according to an advisor.

Expect him to eventually be a typical Republocrat in all matters...

The OP is a moron. There is no caparison between Trump and Brexit for crying out loud. Why would there be? Obama and Clinton way overstepped their bounds when they warned England about leaving the EU. They they just as publicly backtracked and kissed up to the UK claiming they will always be friends. Trump simply said he didn't care. Not his country. If ANY other businessman in the world had said that a decline in 1 currency may bring more money to his business it would have never made the news.

Brexit is NOT AN AMERICAN AFFAIR! We did business with the UK long before they joined the EU and will continue to do business with them now.

Border-less countries is a Star Trek pipe-dream and has been shown to be so by the very problems EVERY member of the EU is now having with immigration and terrorist attacks, the likes which had never been seen.

This is exactly the type of, arrogant, one sided, dismissive and overly self assured article/writer that will continue to push average Americans towards Trump. As has been the case w/US media so far. It's becoming clearer and clearer, more and more quickly, just how disconnected from the average man these people are.

There is no connection between Brexit and the Donald Trump issue. Many in Britain are disgusted by the way the EU is run and the limited way the UK is represented or misrepresented. To me, this is more of a sovereignty issue than an individual protest issue. Trump's statements on Brexit show that he has no depth and no plan other than to figure out how he can make more money for his business.

Donald Trump is a narcissistic demagogue who will do nothing for Americans who are struggling. He is one of the very people who are responsible for the decline in America and its values. He uses fear of foreigners; racism; terrorism and immigration issues to hide his real agenda which is himself. He has nor espoused one reasonable plan to making America great again. He has not espoused even one plan to lower the defense budget; provide real National healthcare; provide free college education or anything else that would assist the poor and middle class.

While I am not a Hillary Clinton fan- I will vote for her simply to stop Donald Trump from destroying America and further divide the American people. Hillary at least will put forth some plans that will allow a trickle down effect and some tax relief for the poor and middle class. She will not do the things that Bernie Sanders would do which would actually change people's lives. At least with Hillary- we get Bill too and that is better than anything Trump could bring to the table.

supporters of Trump--are older, non-college educated, non-urban, distrustful of elites, xenophobic, and nostalgic.

Blah, blah, blah...do you progressive liberal Clinton peanut-gallery folks just copy and paste your garbage?

Not one of your generalizations of Trump supporters can be verified...

What Trump supporters do distrust...is the bought and paid-for liberal press demonetization of Donald Trump...

This is you liberals standard mode of operation...do not engage in any meaningful discussion of issues...use spiteful terms to demean your competition...

Your message is old and tiring...try actually speaking to the issues...this will require one actually having more than a cursory knowledge and use of over used one-liners...

HOw about this for some facts. The big difference between America and the UK is the whiteness of the population. You might say the Democrats have a firewall in that African Americans, Asian AMericans and Latino Americans make up about 35% of the population and they vote very strongly democratic. And among latino americans and asian americans the percentage of those voting Democratic has been going way up. If it hasn't been going up among African Americans, that's because it's got very little room to grow. Anyway, Trump isn't exactly popular with those groups.

In the UK the nonwhite population is about 14%.

NAFTA had been a success for the 1% and a disaster for much of the rest of the population, although you are correct that technological improvement, AKA automation, has also been a disaster for the lower economic class. Neoliberal nonsense economics as a whole has been the reason for the increased inequality within the Reagan-Thatcher sphere and the concomitant social misery and thus the reaction in the form of the Brexit exit vote and the Trump vote. And cheaper wages are what drove the relocation of jobs, not that some unions were in need of some adjustments of expectations.

For an illuminating article on the Brexit vote as well as the Trump phenomena I suggest reading Glenn Greenwald's recent article: https://theintercept.com/2016/06/25/brexit-is-only-the-latest-proof-of-the-insularity-and-failure-of-western-establishment-institutions/

How about this for some facts: In 1776, England sent an envoy over to America and said; "You guys can't run your own country, make your own laws, decide how you want to live or who you want to let in your country" and we shot at you, A LOT. 2016, America sent (cough cough - WE really had no input) a president over to England and said; "You guys can't run your own country, make your own laws, decide how you want to live or who you want to let in your country" .... whistling.gif

Trust me on this ole man...the average American is embarrassed by the past 7+ years of US government antics...hopefully that will change in a few months...dang, you been around since 1776?

Of course we'll trust you, anonymous blogger and not the polls which show that Trump is even more disliked than Clinton. I mean, with your credentials, how could we believe otherwise?

Answer: Because we're not going to be as IDIOTIC as the Brits? (Hopefully.)

Pity poor Britannia. God save America.

And will we be next? The Trumpster went around banging his dishpan, whooping it up for ignorance and superstition, and if he triumphs, then there goes Texas. Ted Cruz will restore the old Republic where citizenship can be restricted to the righteous and the cleanly and the Ten Commandments can be enacted into law and stoning can be a deterrent to heresy. And then goodbye, Kingdom of Vermont and Prince Bernie.
