So like many of the very best things in British culture, happy British twist on something that was imported or was introduced to Brits by foreigners.

Next someone will try to claim 'Chicken Tikka Masala' isn't British!

It certainly aint found too often in the Indian archipelago!

Another thing that hacks me off about these people who try to put the brexiters down is their claiming of the only rights to being multicultural. Just another example of their narrow-minded bigotry I suppose.

I eat several microwave dinners from the 'Tesco Indian Kitchen' range every week, along with plenty of Swedish Cider (KopparBerg), with ice in the glass.

Not to mention a Doner or two from Efes. You can't accuse me of not being 'multicultural'.

cheesy.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gifclap2.gif How very true! Personally I drink German or Belgium beer but I don't want to be one, as I would hope they would not want to be labelled with being from the UK.

This has gone down hill fast, now its about fish and chips

I think its a desperate search for the English culture we are told is under threat.

That fish & chips are an import from Belgium is just a bit of dry humour for us to enjoy.

If its an import from Belgium ,i am glad we didnt import their habit of putting mayonaise on the chips .biggrin.png

It's only an import if you put mayonnaise on your chips.

Stick to salt and vinegar and it's British.

Gosh ,i posted about this before reading your post ,sorry ,and as for anyone saying chicken tikka masala is not British ,wash your mouth out , God they will be saying we never invented popadums with lime pickle next

You guys could do with reading a bit of history - especially Social History. All societies are stratified, all have disenchanted and disenfranchised levels, and 10% of most populations hold or control 90% of the wealth. This nothing new, and no amount of "fixing" will fix it - - it's human nature. Civilised(?) man is insatiable, and his hungers are expressed in whingeing or throwing themselves into work, or art, or many of the activities available. I have never met a truly happy millionaire (and I have met a lot) but I *have* met some truly happy beggars. This has been debated since Aristotle and TVF ain't going to fix it anytime soon smile.png

It doesn't change the tricky issue of ordinary people feeling somewhat short-changed from corporate Britain, and feeling the social pact between themselves and the establishment (the elite) has been broken.

Nothing wrong with them.

Why do you feel the need to mention it ?

I do hope that you are not trying to play the race card!

I use to take a 5 minute walk to Waterloo Station and take the Eurostar from there.... to either Paris or Brussels.

[i.e. wobble wobble wobble creak creak creak...hit the the tunnel and it was almost the equivalent of hitting Mach 1 in comparison ohmy.png]

(I lived in serviced apartments in the old county hall block of buildings).

Loved going to either of those locations to eat on the weekend. It made living there bearable. Not that I don't like a good Steak and Kidney Pie or Fish and Chips (though London was not necessarily the best place to get that). Not that I would like living in Paris - I would probably end up in prison for working 36 hours ohmy.png

My guess is the Brexit referendum will be dragged in to Parliament where it will be stalled, stymied, shoved off to the Lords. I doubt we'll leave based on this referendum. Even if a cogent, acceptable plan is put together, it will likely need to be placed before the people again.

Blimey, now thinking about mums steak and kidney (suet) pudding with onion gravy, roast spuds getting there via beef stock/dripping....Couple of veg, a sprinkling of marrow fat peas.............Followed by her homemade spotted dick with custard or treacle....giggle.gif

Drat, finking about chips fried in beef fat now..............thumbsup.gif

I had a very nice Steak and Ale pie for Sunday lunch at an English country pub in May.

Yes, but we usually left behind democracy, education, roads, railways and a decent language. laugh.png

Absolute nonsense.

That is what you may wish for but the PM in waiting has said "Brexit is Brexit" and she is the boss.

I believe she understands her position as PM depends on Brexit.

No Brexit and she'll be gone PDQ.

First time I went to Belgium I went there on a whim and the first thing I did was go to a local pub and order beer and mussels .... we were there eating and then people dressed up in costumes entered and marching around banging a drum.... so I asked ... is today special or something..... they said it was the biggest day of the year and we figured that we had to finish up quickly and get out looking to see if there were any rooms to be had for the night :P

usually is the operative word, i don't think the Arabs would agree with you although by and large when the Empire crumbled it did so with a certain amount of dignity. That doesn't however remove my point that as far as aggression goes you wouldn't find another country that has invaded and imposed its will for profit on as many countries as the UK.

I drive through it once, on my way to Eindhoven. I was having a curry in a restaurant in the main square when it got filled with football supporters and a double-decker bus. PSV Eindhoven had just won the European Cup. laugh.png

Nope. I was a reluctant 'remainer', but have since become a 'leaver with a brain'.

I tell you the first chance Parliament has this will be kicked in to the long grass, whereupon it will slowly be passed hither and thither. There's every justification too- simply no cogent plan. I'd say 50/50 whether Article 50 will even be enacted.

If a sensible strategy does arise, then it will undoubtedly need to be put to the people again to choose. The referendum was short on mandate.

I agree -- there will be attempts to kick this into the long grass and see what wriggling can be done. The majority in the house were remainers, including TM-the-PM, so let's see how she can carry forward the "Brexit is Brexit" mind-set, and how she deals with the house. Her new cabinet will probably be chosen to have a small majority of Brexiters, but the house is what it is and we can only hope that the increases in the FTSE and Sterling in the last few days will encourage some of the waverers to get on the Brexit wagon. Deferring Article 50 till the end of the year is a big mistake, unless there is a deliberate attempt to keep the markets worried and suppressed while remainers gather their forces. TM has to deal with AM sooner than later, and that will be interesting, given AM's stance on Article 50 needing to be enacted quickly so that the rest of the process can get started and not have to be rushed.

We live in interesting times - no matter what view is held, there is grist for the mill in all these forums. In fact it's over-shadowed many other worthy topics like Trump, the Chinese, etc, etc.
