Why the need for a sub....?

Why not ? The country itself has a long coast line...one suspects Thailand has more coast line than say the UK, but no one questions the need the UK have for subs

Ohh dear did we bother to check any facts before offering this gem....... suggest you check out World Fact Book " Comparisons of Country Coastlines" under CIA website.....

No-one questions the need for UK to have subs as they are a registered member of the NATO alliance and have a dedicated strike force with nuclear capability.... Thailand on the other hand has NO situation where it can be called to war by other concerns nor contributes greatly to any peace keeping effort or force that is designed to enforce or at least try and ensure regional peace and stability.

Having "a" submarine is probably the most useless waste of money and given that their is unlikely to be a sovereign threat to Thailand from anywhere within a sole submarines effective operating sphere this is just a huge waste of public monies.........

Slightly different strategic imperative wouldn't you say?

Chubby cheeks is just telling you who is running the show. Protesters can protest but in the end the military does as it darn well pleases and yes education and from reading this issue of TV traffic rules need to be drastically overhauled and enforced and walkways over water inspected and much much more. The list is endless.

The Chinese are the masters of negotiating the best kick-back deals for both parties. I cannot bring myself to believe that would have had anything to do with the decision making process.

Oh sarcasm sarcasm. Luv it.

The Chinese know best about brown envelopes. The Thais second best. Smiles all around the negotiating table!

Well your right you may have more coast line but people in the country still don't have electricity and running water. The infrastructure resembles something from the dark ages in many places. Avoid the big cities and you are in a time warp.

So maybe, just maybe, spending the money on making peoples lives better and modern is more suitable than someone get an underwater toy to play with.

The waters, around Thailand, aren't deep enough, subs would easily by detected, from the air, then guess what happens.

A sub, Really!! They will never do proper

Maintenance on it and it will sink and kill

Lots of sailors in a year or two.

B 12 Billion should be spent on an "effective" Mental

Health system . With all the angry stabbing, road

Rage, children being murdered by crazy parents,

Teenage gangs and beatings Thailand should do

Something to improve the Mental Health of its

Citizens...and Now!!! B12 Billion would be a start!!

Because Vietnam's got one. You know what boy's are like when their friends get a new toy. The gulf of Thailand is only 50 metres in depth. So hiding a sub from a sub hunting aircraft is going to be near impossible. Seems to me the Chinese has a great influence in what Thailand should buy and do. Maybe the sub deal is a "you rub my back and I'll rub yours" kind of thing. Fat cats are making money off it and don't care about whether it's a good idea or not. Big money deals are taking place, China's in, Thailand's in, who else is at the poker table?

Isn't it obvious? Get the submarines then you have to deepen the Gulf of Thailand to make the submarines viable, hence another project that has to be approved or the submarines are useless. Once that is completed the submarines will be falling to pieces so you order more.

Pretty obvious when you think about it

They've had a submarine depot for years with no submarine so they thought they'd get the cheapest thing to go in there I guess. My stepson finished two years in the Royal Navy college and qualified to be a signaller on an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier they don't actually have.

Thailand shouldn't have and doesn't need any subs.

Thailand needs to spending money on more important things like healthcare and education.

One could argue the same thing about the US, UK, France etc...its a very weak argument indeed

I could argue the US shouldnt have or need nuclear weapons and needs to spend that money on healthcare and education for the poor people

Well I have 'no dog in this fight' but thinking along the lines "If the rest of Asea have submarines, as do other countries, wouldn't it be better to have an ANTI-submarine force?" Helicopters that can detect and destroy a sub. And then the fantastic aircraft carrier could be used to support the helos......or is that to logical?

The Andaman sea averaged out at 1000m water depth, so your saying 1km is not deep enough, how deep is the English Channel or North sea then

"face" ... Army gets their new tanks and things, Navy gets their subs to tie up at the dock and watch them rust away.

remember a few years back when the Thai Air Force bought "obsolete" aircraft from the germans, they were so old that spare parts were no longer being made! and pray tell what is the submarines going to be used for? Patrol the Mekong? hope they are not nuclear! the fish will be glowing!

No actually most would say this is part of the buyout to keep the other branches of the military in line under the Army. In the past, some of those other groups joined the people and went against the army leaders who hijacked the elected government.

Are you implying this is some kind of "bribe" from the Army to the Navy to keep them in line? wink.png

And who gets the brown envelopes tho, that's the bigger question ... Army or Navy?

My guess wire transfers to Singapore.

Great Britain has been a naval power for 500 years and anyone with a smidgen of knowledge of European history understands why they have some submarines.

They had a global empire to protect and develop. Thailand has no such thing fortunately, and is unlikely to be attacked by any nation in the area, except perhaps.......................China.

Thailand's coastline may be long, but surface patrol craft would make more sense, but, it is the "sense" word that is the problem.

Once upon a time Brittania ruled the waves, now, they merely waive the rules.

I think you miss the point of my comment

Vietnam has 5 Russian Subs

Singapore has 6

Malaysia has 2

Burma is purchasing 2 from the Russians delivery 2016 possibly

Ergo every country in this region with the exception of Lao,s and Cambodia already has or is in the process of getting subs...so why not Thailand ? Its their right if they wish to...the blow hard farangs have no say
