Rainsy to Face Trial this Month

Featured Replies

Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) president Sam Rainsy will be tried in absentia later this month for allegedly falsifying public documents supporting allegations of Vietnamese territorial encroachment after the Phnom Penh Municipal Court finished its investigation into the charges on Wednesday. Mr. Rainsy will also be tried on public defamation charges filed by National Assembly President Heng Samrin, it was announced yesterday.

Municipal investigative judge Kao Vanny concluded the investigation into Mr. Rainsy’s border-related charges this week, saying in a statement released yesterday that the opposition leader stands accused of being an accomplice to opposition senator Hong Sok Hour, who faces separate charges of forging public documents, using a forged document and incitement for publishing a video on his Facebook page last year depicting a fake treaty signing where Cambodia erased its borders with Vietnam. Mr. Sok Hour was charged after allegedly using the video as evidence that Cambodia’s government in the 1980s agreed to the dissolution of its border with Vietnam. He was detained last August on Prime Minister Hun Sen’s orders.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court spokesman Ly Sophanna said the municipal prosecutor would make conclusions about Mr. Rainsy’s charges within the next two days, and that his hearing would take place later this month. His indictment stems from a Facebook post on November 17. Attached to a video clip of a speech given by former King Norodom Sihanouk in the early 1980s, Mr. Rainsy posted the words: “We remember that the regime born on 7 January 1979 used their tribunal to sentence our late King Norodom Sihanouk to death by accusing him of being a traitor.”

Cambodian politics......it doesn't seem as though the situation will ever improve with Hun Sen in control.

Not as long as Australia prop him up with funds.

Fair go louse!!! Australia only gave Cambodia $40 MILLION for them to agree to take refugees, and up to another $15 MILLION to aid actual resettlement.

So far 5 have taken up the option to go to Cambodia. Three have subsequently decided that home wasn't so bad after all, so Iran is the happy recipient of two former citizens, and Myanmar has welcomed back a Rhonigya man. $40+ million to unload a few refugees is good value. In case you didn't get it, that's politician speak for "we f***** up again".
