PHUKET:-- Karon experienced the worst flooding in decades after a heavy downpour this morning, the municipality’s deputy mayor Ittiporn Sangkaew told the Phuket Gazette today.

Shops and houses opposite hillside construction sites along Patak Road were inundated with mud and water up to one meter deep.

"This is the worst flooding we've seen in decades," said the deputy mayor.

Yes Mr. Mayor, that's what happens when you strip the hillsides bare of trees and other vegetation to make room for endless hotels and condos...at the first big rain the hillside collapses. Now that you know this, I don't expect any change in Phuket's over-development.

PHUKET: -- Flash floods wreaked havoc across southern Phuket, with floodwaters reaching up to a metre deep in Karon and deluges sweeping along the streets at the south end of Patong this morning (July 19).

Homes at the Rawai sea gypsy village, among other areas of Rawai, suffered flooding of up to 40cm deep. In response, Rawai Municipality dispatched teams of workers with pumps to clear the floodwaters.

In Patong, the streets along the foot of the hills at the southern end of the resort town, where Nanai Rd meets Sirirat Rd, were flooded with fast-moving waters of up to 50cm deep.

The floodwaters receded within a couple of hours, but officials from the Patong branch of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM Patong) warned residents and motorists to beware further flooding.

Absolutely, better planning for infrastructure of drainage/waterways and balanced vegetation and I guess restrictions on the building permits could be a good idea.

Building permits are very restricted here until the appropriate fees are paid.
