PHUKET:-- Officials in Krabi have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts to salvage a yacht which sunk in Ao Nang on July 6.

Alexander Travkin, 31, from Russia and his partner Julia Mironova, 29, from the Ukraine filed a report with the Krabi Marine Police at noon on July 7 where it was stated that their 12 metre yacht Adventure had sunk at Ao Nang after mooring it late the previous night due to high winds and waves.

The couple returned the next morning to find the yacht had sunk, the mast was still visible and all our belongings were floating in the water. (See story here.)

Krabi Marine Chief Boonchaw Tangsiripaisan told The Phuket News today (July 21), “Officials from the navy, Krabi province and Khao Phanom Bencha National Park have made several unsuccessful attempts to salvage Adventure which sunk on July 6, the latest being today.

Somehow rescuing yachts with a backhoe seems a vast contradiction in terms.....

Guess they didn't have any steamrollers available......

Better left at the bottom of the sea for artificial reef. At my club we have had boats go down, but up and on the dry within hours. It appears to be no proper tools to do it here.Divers and ping pong balls do wonders.

That is one of the most depressing & sad pictures for any worthy sailor to set eyes upon ! ! ! I hope they will be able to re-float this small yacht sooner rather than later.

Like yourself, I have been a sailor all my life and sailed and raced a 12 metre IOR yacht for many years, and I am sad to see any boat go down.

Must be getting to the point where the cost of salvage is greater than the residual value of the hull. Presumably they have already removed the engine, mast and rigging. Depending on the extent of damage to the hull, both now and due to digging the sand out around it with a backhoe, it may be better to cut one's losses. Who is paying for all this?
