Emirates airliner with 275 onboard crash lands in Dubai

By ADAM SCHRECK

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Emirates flight from India with 275 people on board crash-landed at Dubai's main airport on Wednesday, sending black smoke billowing into the air and halting all traffic at the Middle East's busiest airport. Dubai authorities said all passengers were evacuated safely.

Dubai-based Emirates said the accident happened as Flight EK521 was arriving from the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram. The airline gave no details on the fate of those onboard.

The Dubai government's official media office said on Twitter that all passengers were "evacuated safely and no injuries have been reported so far," however.

It said authorities were "dealing with the incident at the moment to ensure safety of all" and that all departures from the airport have been halted until further notice.

"Our main priority at this time is the safety and wellbeing of all involved and full co-operation is being extended to the authorities and emergency services managing the situation," the carrier said.

Video posted online showed black smoke billowing from what looked like an Emirates jetliner lying on its belly on the runway.

The Boeing 777 departed Thiruvananthapuram at 10:19 a.m. and was scheduled to land at 12:50 p.m. local time, according to Emirates.

Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, a popular beachside tourist destination. Man blue-collar migrant workers employed in the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf nations come from Kerala.

Officials from the airline and Dubai International Airport declined to immediately provide further details when reached by phone.

Dubai International is by far the Mideast's busiest airport, and is the world's busiest air hub in terms of international passenger traffic.

Government-backed Emirates is the region's biggest carrier, and operates the world's largest airline fleet of the wide-body 777 long-haul aircraft.

Sky are reporting that the pilot told passengers there was a problem with the landing gear and that they would be making an emergency landing.

Brilliant job from the flight and cabin crew.

:clap2:

Not what i heard, apparently the crew decided to do a go around at the last moment and retracted the gear but the aircraft wouldnt climb and plonked itself on the runway

This pleases me a lot. The reason is i fly with Emirates all the time and have been through Dubai a million times. The chances of an Emirates flight crashing again is mega slim now. Rarely does an airline have more than one crash.

Gladly no one died or got hurt.....

Technically it didn't crash, just crash landed.

So you're still in with a shout Franky.

Quite an impressive picture of the plane still sliding down the runway below.
As an European (and thus biased towards Airbus) I have to say that these 777 are built really tough.
This one has obviously slammed down to the runway rather violently (one can see a completely detached engine)  and managed to remain in one piece. The one running out of fuel that fell like a stone ahead of the runway in Heathrow and the one which literally cartwheeled in Los Angeles did too.

Congrats to the cabin crew for getting all the passengers out in less a minute obviously.

DXB closed for a while... I pity the people who were flying Emirates from Suwa tonight.

Firefighter dies while battling blaze after Emirates airline crash-lands in Dubai

DUBAI: -- A firefighter has died while fighting a blaze after an Emirates Airlines plane burst into flames after it crash-landed at Dubai International Airport.

The airline’s CEO said 14 other people were hospitalised after Wednesday’s (August 3) incident. It was not immediately clear if the injured were passengers, crew or rescue workers.

A man waiting for relatives on the flight said he had spoken to them by phone. “They said they’re safe and alright, but that they felt a great panic as the plane was on fire.”

Another man said his family had also told him they were OK and there had been a problem with the landing gear.

Footage has emerged purporting to show passengers collecting their hand luggage from overhead lockers before evacuating the plane.

‘Terrifying’

“It was actually really terrifying. As we were landing there was smoke coming out in the cabin,” passenger Sharon Maryam Sharji said. “People were screaming and we had a very hard landing. We left by going down the emergency slides and as we were leaving on the runway we could see the whole plane catch fire; it was horrifying.”

CEO statement

“Our first priority is the care and wellbeing of our passengers and our crew, and to answer queries from their families and friends,” Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airlines, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said in a statement. “We have activated our humanitarian response teams to provide support, care and compassion to those affected.

“We have extended our full co-operation to the authorities and emergency services managing the situation.”

Full statement

Safety experts said it was too early to pinpoint any cause for the crash. Investigators will scour the wreckage and interview pilots, controllers and witnesses for clues to any technical malfunctions, human error or weather-related problems.

Judging by footage of the aircraft’s intact tail section, where the ‘black box’ flight recorders are located, vital voice and data recordings should be available for investigators.

Online weather reports before the crash reported Dubai was relatively windy, with dust blowing and “wind shear” reported on all runways.

Wind shear is a potentially hazardous condition involving sudden and unpredictable changes in wind direction or speed.

Emirates flight 521 had travelled from the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum.

Condolences to the family of the firefighter.

Great evacuation and no loss of life especially with passengers trying to collect luggage from the overhead lockers and someone taking the time to video what was going on.  Good work by the cabin crew to get people moving.

The fact that there was no loss of passenger life shows just how important it is to follow proper evacuation procedures. Congratulations to all airline and rescue crew involved. My condolences to the family of the firefighter.

The BBC Website has a video filmed on-board after the aircraft had crash landed, was on fire and the cabin was filling with smoke.

First of all I thought it was incredible that someone deemed it necessary to take the time to video the inside of the aircraft during the emergency, secondly as passengers were trying to squeeze past each other to get off the aircraft, a few passengers were still taking their belongings from the overhead luggage storage compartments thus delaying others evacuating. Despite the idiotic actions of some passengers they still all managed to get off safely.
