Info sought re donating body to medschool or other.

I have never seen this topic addressed here, and I hope it doesn't attract too many self-styled TV Comedians. Does anyone know who to contactregarding the donation of ones body to local med school or other local  research facility? Would the body still be acceptable for research purposes if there was cancer present, and no usable organs to recycle?

I would like to avoid the wat-based Buddhist cremation rituals altogether, and this seems to be a worthwhile alternative.

Also,  I have heard there is a low cost, non-religious cremation facility (cremation for 10,00- baht?) somewhere in CM. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks.

Suan Dok Hospital does it and they are used in the CMU Medical school.  Pick up, return for cremation, or they will dispose of the remains, well organized.  Don't know for sure about the cancer issue but probably no problem.  Contact the hospital and make the papers with them.

I registered last January at Suan Dok to donate my body to the medical school.  My wife answered all the questions and I just signed.  My wife said they do not take the bodies if there is cancer or AIDS.  I would say you would have to check with them to get the exact details.

If you go to any of their Information desks, they can direct you to the correct office.  As with most specific places there it is not easy to find unless you know your way around.  They are very helpful in my experience.

PM me if you have any other questions - if I can answer them I will.

I understand the students at the ITM massage school visit a morgue at a hospital as part of their study - I guess to see how the muscles and tendons interact

might be be worth checking with them to see what hospital they use

I believe bodies go to the morgue at the back of Suan Dok. It's not easy to find. I've been there to arrange the storage and delivery for cremation of a body. I would inquire there.

There's an English language brochure from CMU Dept. of Anatomy about body donation.  As mentioned, the bodies are used in anatomy classes and, no they don't accept donations with cancer or HIV.  The brochure says they won't accept anyone over age 80, but I do know of donations of people over age 80 if they had been active and healthy up to the time of their passing.

After the donation, the medical school handles all the arrangements for cremation and a final Buddhist service.  The contact person for the donation is invited to the service, but all correspondence is in Thai.

My partner died in Chiangmai in 1996, having previously signed the documents for donating his body to the medical school (Maharaj Hospital/CMU).  He died at the hospital, so everything was handled by them, with one exception;  I was still responsible for getting the death certificate, which involved visits to various offices all over town.

His official cause of death was a brain tumour, but in fact he had naso-pharyngeal cancer, which had moved up into the brain.  Nobody seemed bothered by this.

This may not be any help to you , more a point of interest.

As I have lived in Thailand many years now and hold an organ donation card from back home I decided to change it to here instead as I live here full time. I was told I was not acceptable because of my age (over the 50ish mark).

I was 65 when I registered at Suan Dok in January, 2016.  Not sure of the upper age limit.

Where at Suan Doak did you go to register?

Thanks everyone for your help.

For anyone from Khon Kaen area  interested in this , I know that the Govt hospital there does this as I went with my Thai GF so she could register herself and her mother for this arrangement. we travelled from Udon Thani for her to register.

Is there anyway to register to donate your body if a surgery or something goes south while in Chiang Mai Ram? I asked and was kind of given a run around saying just be sure your emergency contact knows what to do.
