PATTAYA: -- Just after midnight, on August 17, Pattaya Police were informed of an apparent suicide at the Kao Karat Condominium, Soi Arunothai 2, Pattaya.

Sawang Boriboon Medics were on the scene attending Mr Russell John Calcutt, a fifty-nine-year-old Australian, who was lying at the foot of the fifteen-story building.

His friend, who preferred not to be named, told reporters that he had a drink with him and his Thai girlfriend earlier in the evening.

We're told the police have assumed that Calcutt "... ‘must have been depressed’ about leaving...".

Have they come to this assumption after interviewing his girlfriend?  According to the PattayaOne article, there has been no further mention of her.

I suggest that the following link is essential reading for any foreigner living in (or visiting) Thailand (http://www.farang-deaths.com/).

Hopefully, it won't make you too depressed when it's time to leave!

Yea, why assume he was depressd? He may have been so happy he just couldn't stand it so he jumped.

So you are positive he jumped on purpose ?

Any note or other evidence ?

You should join the volunteer police with your way of thinking..

The police seems to succeed in getting people to believe that absurd notion of SUICIDE. Now every time people to report such cases must say ,hey Khun Policeman STUPID falang here kild imslf

Actually I have not read any such accident or suicide of Farangs for a whole week I started to worry!!?

Suicide is dangerous

Its a forgone conclusion us  Farangs just love jumping off balconies. Especially, after a good holiday. Couldn't think of a better way to end it all, with such a grand finale. Police want concrete evidence and that's exactly what they get - everywhere.

Forget theories - it's our birthight :coffee1:

Every week it's the same sad story, deliriously happy farang, saddened by the thought of leaving his loving girlfriend decides to end it all by both he and the girlfriend jumping off the roof/balcony......."hold on" girlfriend says "my phone just rang, you go first and I'll follow"!  :cheesy::cheesy::thumbsup::wai:

His farang friend would now if he was depressed or not. No need to speculate. RIP.

My theory is that the number of foreigners committing suicide here is not a lot higher than it is back at home. Media in most Farang countries don't publicize suicides as they do here to fill up their newspapers, out of respect for their families.

sorry end again.

where is the miscalculation - in self budgeting or the person has been drowned by too many sorrows in the land he was visiting.

I am often depressed but that is a very long from taking your own life.  Always the preferred option for the BIB to say suicide, wouldn't want to tarnish Thailand's reputation by suggesting foul play!

maybe  the cause was not depression at all;  there is no mention of a break up but it might have been abandonment and a broken heart which is much more painful than depression

I heard there are several mafia members at 9 Karat condo who have been threatening foreigners and Thai. Anyone that complains about theft of condo common water or electricity or non-payment of maintenance fees by mafia controlled condo rooms is subject to threats and violence.  Maybe the victim spoke too loud?

Some residents are saying it was murder and the Police are just trying to cover-up the true matter to avoiding scaring the locals and to avoid an Army investigation.

I don't know about mafia but I lived there for a year and was very happy to move out. Nirun down the road was much more pleasant.

The Pattaya Police quickly claimed it was suicide before completing a thorough investigation. It is obvious, the criminal act occurred several floors higher, yet the Police did not collect evidence that would lead them to a murder investigation.  The fall started from a common area breezeway, accessible to anyone, not from a private room balcony. The Police did not interview tenants on every floor who live in the proximity of the breezeway. The Police did not review or collect video before reaching the conclusion that it was suicide. Video is available of the breezeway on some floors.

If the Police investigated the matter thoroughly, they will find lots of evidence of violence and threats of violence, including murder, at 9 Karat condo, especially against foreigners.  If they look into their own Police files, they will find lots of complaints of condo owners and residents since about September 2015, related to Mr. C., his employees and the old condo management.

Mr. C lost effective control of the condo in January 2016 when a new condo committee was formed. He lost control because a bank took possession of many of his rooms for unpaid debts. Mr. C. still owns, through his companies and through family members, about 100-150 rooms. Many are rooms are rented, and some rooms get unmetered water and electricity because they tap into condo common supplies There are no records of maintenance fees being paid, or funds received from Mr. C.,  for Mr. C.’s rooms.

Since January 2016, Mr. C. has been trying to regain control of condo management and Condo funds. “Enforcers” were stationed at the condo to intimidate and control condo committee members, staff and complaining condo owners. Many Condo Committee members and the JPM resigned because of these threats. After numerous complaints, these enforcers were removed and jailed by Police and Army earlier this year, but were released from jail, apparently by orders from a Thai Army General.  The Enforcers returned quickly and easily intimidated the Thais but the foreigners have been less compliant and continue to complain.

Maybe Mr. C. and associates are sending a message to the foreigners, “you won’t be flying home, and you’ll flying into the ground instead”.

I hope the Thai Army reads this post and takes appropriate action. If they don’t, there may be more violence and deaths for complaining 9 Karat residents.

If true then you should please forward such information to the police, the military, the local news paper and a few other places

Rather simplistic to assume being depressed about going home.

Was he booked one way or return might be a starting point.

There is also a background of intimidation at this condo......

It's widely accepted on Thaivisa - even among the serial victims - that more than a few farangs here in Thailand are unhinged or depressed.

Why, then, is it that whenever one of them ends up dead from a fall, there's all this speculation as to the involvement of a third party?

The guy's friend and his girlfriend say they were in the room together when the deceased excused himself. Of course, it depends on whether or not they're being truthful but how do people expect the cops to establish the truth at the scene when the statements of both witnesses tally up and there's no obvious evidence to refute their accounts of what happened?

Sorry, but not all Westerners' lives are so idyllic and wonderful that the thought of suicide is out of the question.

How?  Even if true you could be done for defamation.  It's no good complaining to police - they are the mafia.

What do you mean how?  Print out the post and mail it, drop it off, email it to any of the editors on the newspaper. Or give the rest of the information the guy alleges he has in whatever format he wants.  The guy posted it here, he is already liable for defamation if it exists

The Thai girlfriend was not the dead man's girlfriend.  It was the friend's girlfriend.
