Must See Cafes, Restaurants, Bars in CM

Featured Replies

I'm visiting Chiang Mai with my girlfriend for a few days to see the university. We'll be staying somewhat near the university--the condo seems to be in between the campus and downtown.

I've done some research online, but haven't been able to find good recommendations of nice cafes/restaurants/bars in the city. I know Chiang Mai has a ton of good cafes--which one is the most beautiful/best atmosphere? What about good Indian/Middle Eastern/western restaurants? Any other particular places that are must visits in the city?

For the best coffee experience in Thailand try Ristr8to. They have 2 branches in Nimmanhaemin.

If you like Italian food try Ragu Rustico Italiano in the Promenada Mall.

Not posh, but good food and service.

# 2 Tripadivsor is a very bad advisor in my opinion and easy to manipulate.

# 3 Ristretto is just ok, nothing special, hot cappuccino's are cold most of the time.

# 4 Send somebody to a failed mall on his holiday?

There is a small adobe / mud restaurant in the parking lot of the university art department. It's worth a visit for something unique. Din Dee is the name I believe.

Seeing as the Uni is in the Nimman area:

Best cafe: Ristr8to (On Nimman between Sois 3 & 5)

Best India: Accha (Nimman Soi 7)

Best Italian: Why Not (Nimman Soi 13)

Best (only) ME: Babylonian Iraqi Restaurant (Maya Mall)

good Middle East restaurants? head over to Sukhumvit soi 3, get off BTS Nana exit, pick any one of them. you won't find anything like that here, not even close. Indian - Taj Mahal is not bad, probably the best here.

i don't mind the Prom myself, but i live here and know what to expect. i also would not recommend the Prom to a visitor as it could be quite depressing to be around a failed mall. in the last 3 weeks, 3 more shops have closed up on the 2nd Floor Building A near Chi Chang, and every shop on the 1st Floor Building B, across from the restaurants are now out of business.

TripAdvisor is very helpful.

I don't how you can think it is easy  to manipulate.

My company is on it and we only have genuine reviews which are always useful for future guests.

So if your only tip is about a cold coffee shop i would go for the TripAdvisor site.

Thank you and have a nice day !

Trip advisor is easy to manipulate simply by actively asking customers and friends to write reviews.

Look at the top 10 restaurants in Chiang Mai, there are 2 coffeeshops in there.

There are way better restaurants in Chiang Mai, but they don't care about trip advisor.

Ristretto was also for years in the top 10 of best restaurants in Chiang Mai, absolutely nonsense of course, but if you believe in Trip advisor, go ahead.

Try TripAdvisor and leave some helpful reviews  behind after visiting one of those places for other readers.

Good luck

The restaurant recommendations on trip advisor may produce at best, a barometer reading of mediocrity. Most people writing in have absolutely no idea of what good food is.
